I’ll go over some basic information about Wikipedia on this slide, to make sure everyone is on the same page: Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that anyone can edit. More than 370 million unique visitors a month - approx. 5% of world population. More than 17 million articles at the moment.

Wikipedia as a teaching tool The idea of using WP as a teaching tool was not invented by the Wikimedia Foundation. The idea grew organically among academics. The photograph L to R: Cheryl Moy (Univ. of Michigan), Tol Foster (UNC-Chapel Hill), Anne McNeil (Univ. of Michigan), Davida Scharf (New Jersey Institute of Technology), Robert Cummings (Univ. of Mississippi), Jim Lipuma (New Jersey Institute of Technology) See Schools & Universities Project link for more examples of classrooms that are using WP as a teaching tool. Scholarly sourcing / research skills Collaboration & consensus Why use Wikipedia as a teaching tool? Writing skills Media literacy Scholarly sourcing / research skills Collaboration & consensus Community of practice Learning objectives for using WP as a teaching tool: “5 buckets.” (I’ll spend substantial time on this slide, going over each of the learning objectives.) GLOBAL AUDIENCE

“Public Policy Initiative” Fall 2010: 14 classes | 13 instructors | 10 universities Support infrastructure: Brochures, handouts Sample lesson plans Instructional videos Campus Ambassadors & Online Ambassadors This slide delves into the Public Policy Initiative, giving an overview of what happened in the fall semester and the support resources provided by Wikimedia. This will then transition into Yonatan’s discussion of the Georgetown University class, as a “case study.”
