Systems of Government

Distribution of Power In order to have an effective government, there must be a method for distributing power (authority) within the country. Federal Unitary Parliamentary Confederations

Federal Systems Federal Systems: Power is, “layered” or shared among different levels. (ex: United States – Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Branches and Local, State, and National levels.)

Unitary Systems Unitary System: Government power is held at the center and the central (national) government performs ALL of the government functions.

Parliamentary System Parliamentary System: Government power lies with the legislative body and the leader of the country (usually called the Prime Minister) is part of the legislature.

Confederal System Confederal System: Government power is located with the independent states and there is little power in the central government.
