Mitosis: Mitosis is a type of cell division in which a daughter cell receives the same number of identical chromosomes as the parent cell. Mitosis is necessary.

Mitosis Notes

Cell Division occurs in a series of stages, or phases

Interphase 1st Phase - Interphase Chromosomes are replicated (doubled) Chromosomes appear as threadlike coils called chromatin 3 parts of Interphase – G1, S and G2

Prophase 2nd Phase - Prophase Chromatin coils up and condenses into chromosomes Nuclear membrane dissolves Spindle starts to form

Metaphase 3rd Phase – Metaphase Sister chromatids line up at the MIDDLE of the cell Sister chromatids are attached to the spindle by the centromere

Anaphase 4th Phase – Sister chromatids split at the centromere Sister chromatids move APART/AWAY from each other as the spindle fibers shorten

Telophase 5th Phase – Spindle dissolves Telophase Nuclear membrane reforms around the TWO nuclei Chromosomes turn back into chromatin

Cytokinesis 6th Phase – Cytokinesis CELL MEMBRANE pinches off in between two cells and splits cell into two new cells Both cells have IDENTICAL DNA
