Psychology Life Hack of the Week Are you a pain catastrophizer? Research has found that those who think their pain will get worse and feel they will be unable to cope actually suffer more pain than those who think less negatively. However, research has also found that therapy designed to reduce pain catastrophizing reduced rated pain levels too (Sullivan et al., 2006)

Name the sampling method described in each statement: Starter: Sampling techniques recap Name the sampling method described in each statement:

Read the exam practice question on page 10 of the lesson 7 handout: A Level Paper 2 (7182/2) Specimen Materials – First Set Answer questions 15, 16 and 17.

Review Your Maths Skills for Psychology Find the 20 questions arranged around the room. You need to say whether the statement in colour is true or false. Complete the calculations on the A3 sheet on your table. Finished? Do the MCQs and the marking exercise on research methods.

Mark the Answers MCQs Experimental methods: 1C, 2C, 3D, 4B Control of variables: 1A, 2D, 3D Types of experiment: 1C, 2C, 3A, 4B Experimental design: 1D, 2B, 3D, 4A Sampling: 1B, 2C, 3D, 4A Ethical issues: 1A, 2B, 3B, 4D

Assess Yourself! Note down any maths skill that you need help with/want to improve AND your confidence level with maths in general.

What do you know already? How do you calculate the mean, median, mode and range? What is the difference between quantitative and qualitative data? Why do you think that the mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation and graphs are collectively called descriptive statistics? Explain a strength and a weakness of the mean, median and mode.

Measures of Central Tendency Consider the following data sets: 5, 7, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17 5, 7, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 98 Cat, cat, dog budgie, snake, gerbil Which measure of central tendency would be most appropriate for each data set? Justify your answer.

Complete the evaluation table – page 3 Strength Median Weakness Mode Weakness Mean Strength Median Strength Mean Strength Mode Weakness Median

Measures of Dispersion - Range Consider the following data sets: 100, 101, 99, 102, 98, 100 100, 40, 120, 60, 180, 100 Mean = 100 Range = (102-98)+1= 5 Mean = 100 Range = (180-60)+1= 121 The range tells us the spread of scores and is easy to calculate. However, it ignores all but two scores – it does not tell us about the general spread or variability of other scores in the data set.

Measures of Dispersion –Standard Deviation The standard deviation tells us about the variability of individual scores – how they are distributed around the mean. A low SD = scores are grouped around the mean. A high SD = scores are more widely spread out.

Group Task: Exam Practice – page 7 In your tables: Answer AQA A Unit 1 June 2009 – 3(a). Present your answer on the whiteboard nearest your table. 1 mark for median or mean. NOT mode. 1 mark for correct justification 1 mark for correct answer 1 mark for showing workings out.

Plenary: Write down ONE question based on ONE of the learning objectives for the session:
