Dual Enrollment and Early Admissions

What is dual enrollment? Dual enrollment is a program that allows high school students to simultaneously earn college or vocational credit toward a postsecondary diploma, certificate, or degree at a Florida public institution that will also count towards a high school diploma.

Who is eligible for dual enrollment? High school students in grades 10-12 Students with the appropriate unweighted cumulative GPA AA and AS - 3.0, College Credit Certificate - 2.5; PSAV – 2.0 Students with passing placement test scores in reading and writing

Minimum Reading and Writing Scores for Placement in General Education Courses READING WRITING PERT Reading: 106+ Writing: 103+ SAT CR: 440+ CR: 440+ ACT Reading: 19+ English: 17+

Minimum Mathematics Scores for Placement in selected Math Courses MAT 1033 (Intermediate Algebra) Gateway course to MAC 1105, MGF 1106 & MGF 1107 PERT: Math 114 – 122 ACT: Math 19+ SAT: Math 440+ MAC 1105 (College Algebra), MGF 1106 (Liberal Arts Math 1) & 1107 (Liberal Arts Math 2) PERT: Math 123+ ACT: Math 20+ SAT: Math 520+

Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) Info Taken on the computer Untimed test – usually takes 2 ½ to 3 hrs to complete 30 Reading, 30 Writing and 30 Math questions Scores range from 50-150; score reports are printed at the end of testing Scores from the SAT or ACT must be submitted directly to EFSC; EFSC accepts the best score from any of these MUST HAVE PASSING READING AND WRITING SCORES

When can I take the test ? PERT - any time at EFSC call 632-1111 to make an appointment with Cocoa campus testing SAT – various dates – check website www.collegeboard.org ACT – various dates – check website www.act.org

Can dual enrollment courses be used to satisfy subject area HS graduation requirements? YES! Credits earned through dual enrollment count toward either subject-area or elective high school graduation requirements in accordance with the Dual Enrollment Course - High School Subject Area Equivalency List published and updated regularly by the Department of Education. AMH1010 = first semester American History AMH1020 = second semester American History (must complete both at EFSC due to EOC test) ENC1101 = 1 year of English ENC1102 = 1 year of English MAC1105= 1 year of Math All 4 credit foreign language semester courses = 1 year of HS

What type of courses are there? AA degree program- traditional academics prepares students to go to 4 yr university AS/AAS degree program- more technical prepares students for a specific career. Certificate- specialized trade, apprenticeship prepares students in a variety of skills.

Are all college courses available? Most college courses are available though there is a list of approved courses. Check college catalog or online for offerings. Remedial, physical education skills, and courses that teach an applied skill are not available.

When and where are the courses? Courses may be taken at any EFSC campus Cocoa, Titusville, Melbourne, Palm Bay, Virtual Courses may also be taken in the summer (max. of 6 credits) At MIHS (Child Care Program) MIHS Collegiate HS Program Classes at EFSC may be taken during periods 1-3 or 5-7 at M.I.

How many credits can be taken through Dual Enrollment? Dual enrollment students (not in Early Admission or Full-time Dual Enrollment) may register for no more than 11 credit hours in the fall and spring or 3 courses a semester. Students may take a total of two courses during EFSC’s different summer terms. Early Admissions students take a minimum of 12 credit hours (4 classes) and up to 21 credit hours a semester.

How are the courses weighted? College-level dual enrollment courses are weighted the same as advanced placement courses. State universities are now required to weight dual enrollment credit in English/Language Arts, Math, Science, S. Studies or Foreign Language, when calculating grade point averages used for admission decisions.

Will the courses transfer? Dual enrollment college credit will transfer to any Florida public college or university offering that course with the same prefix and number and must be treated as though taken at the receiving institution. For students entering private or out of state schools, please check with the college on their college credit transfer policy.

Dual Enrollment with a Purpose Students need to have an idea of their intended major when choosing DE classes Students should identify major/elective courses at the college level intended to meet the prerequisites of intended major There is a list of approved courses that students can take in DE, unless they can relate it to their intended major.

$$$$$ Who pays the tuition? Students who attend a Florida public college or university are exempt from registration, matriculation, or laboratory fees for approved dual enrollment courses. Even if you are Early Admissions! $$$$$

What about the textbooks? Textbooks that are required for the course are provided/purchased by MIHS. These books are the property of the school and cannot be written in. They must be returned to the school at the end of each semester. “Toolkits” are not provided by the school. Textbooks that are recommended are not provided by the school. One time use items (lab manuals) are not provided by the school. Access codes are provided. Students must print out their book list each semester and give to the media clerk.

Dual Enrollment vs. Advanced Placement Courses DE courses = one semester – most courses equal .5 credit (except for English, selected Sciences and Math classes = 1.0 credit) Earn C or higher to get college credit AP classes last all year but you must pass the end of year exam with a 3 or higher to get college credit.

Early College Credit Option (ECCO) Allows students to retake a DE course for grade forgiveness only on college transcript. May enroll in courses not approved for DE May register for additional EFSC courses beyond number permitted through DE Credits count towards AA or CCC degree but does NOT count towards HS credit. Students pay for all tuition/fees and textbooks. Registration completed at EFSC, not at HS

Dual Enrollment VS Early Admissions Dual enrollment students attend college part time. Dual enrollment students take some classes at MIHS and some classes at college. Early admissions students attend college full time during their Senior year. Early admissions students do not take any classes at MIHS.

Early Admissions VS Full Time Dual Enrollment Seniors only Begins fall semester All classes at college May still need 1 HS credit in English, Science, S. Studies, Math and ½ credit Performing Arts FT Dual Enrollment Seniors only Begins spring semester All classes at college Must have met all graduation requirements except .5 in social studies &/or science and 2 rigorous courses as defined by SSNP

Early Admission Eligibility Requirements All subject area graduation requirements MUST be completed by 12th grade except for: .5 credit in Performing Art 1 credit each in English, Math, Science and Social Studies These required credits must be completed at the college preferably during fall term. 3.0 GPA and all passing test scores

Early Admissions Process Take College Placement testing – PERT, ACT or SAT (scores sent directly to EFSC) Attend an EFSC Orientation now – turn in EFSC application and sealed transcript Pick up EA packet at the EA meeting March 2nd during 7th period in the cafeteria or after the meeting from guidance Complete essay questions and forms Give the EA Eligibility Evaluation form to your counselor to fill out Get back your paperwork from your counselor and bring over to EFSC Cocoa – Bldg 11 on 2nd floor – information desk. Deadline to turn in = May 10th – no late applications will be accepted!

Is Dual Enrollment right for me? Dual enrollment is an opportunity for you to challenge yourself and to accelerate your educational opportunities. You can save time and $$$$ These are college courses and the amount of work necessary to succeed may be much greater than high school courses. Becomes part of your permanent college and high school transcript.

How do I sign up? Meet with your counselor to see if you are eligible Take a placement test You may take SAT, ACT or PERT Attend an EFSC orientation – take completed EFSC application, official transcript and picture ID Meet with your counselor in guidance to fill out EFSC accelerated program form to register for classes Take accelerated program form to EFSC Advisors when registration begins Early Admissions packets available 1st week of March 2016
