Target setting For learners

Objectives Why do we set targets? What do we set targets for? How do we set targets? Set and review targets

Why do we set targets? In the context of our learners why do we set targets…….. What’s point? Do this as an individual reflection and write down your thoughts – 2 minutes

Why do we set targets? If learners don’t know what they are aiming to achieve, they cannot know whether they have achieved it If they don’t have a plan , they cannot review it and know how well it worked and learn from that experience To provide individual and personalised challenge To improve and enhance learning To help review progress IMPROVE PROGRESS CHALLENGE MOTIVATE

What do we set targets for? Discuss with peer and record answers for feedback

What do we set targets for? To improve aspects of academic progress To improve aspects of behaviour To develop personal and social skills To develop work readiness Attendance and punctuality In class behaviour Meeting deadlines Developing skills Improving grades Etc etc

How do we set targets? Learners need to know that setting targets and making plans is about clarifying: Why – you want to do an activity What – you want to achieve by the end of the activity When – you intend to complete the activity How - you are you going to approach it Example: Attendance To demonstrate my work readiness my attendance needs to improve to meet the College minimum expectation of 89%, this by the end of term, to do so my weekly attendance aim is to attend all my timetabled sessions , including tutorials , maths and English WHY: To demonstrate my work readiness my attendance needs to improve WHAT: To meet the College minimum expectation of 89%, WHEN : This by the end of term HOW: To do so my weekly attendance aim is to attend all my timetabled sessions , including tutorials , maths and English

Approaches to setting targets Use the sheet provided write targets using the Why When What How approach Targets to be no more than a couple of sentences Complete 5 in 10 minutes OR work towards completing 10
