Chapter 10: Communicating in Groups, Valuing Diversity DO NOW: List all the styles of diversity present in this picture

Write a 1-minute paper on how this video relates to group projects. Group Dynamics https://www.ted.com/talks/tom_wujec_build_a_tower “Manage the process” Write a 1-minute paper on how this video relates to group projects.

Stereotyping: an individual’s thoughts about a group of people, applied to an individual perceived to be a member of that group Prejudice: an individual’s feelings based on stereotype(s) Discrimination: an individual’s actions based on prejudice Oppression:  societal or systemic discrimination against a group of people

How is your own culture shaped? What do you think culture is? Is it the same for everyone? Is someone right and someone wrong? What do you think diversity is? Is diversity “black and white”?

Create your own individual fish bowl What does this bowl represent? What do the colors say about you? Does it make a difference, now that you can visually see your own diversity? Why? Do you think it is easier for others to be prejudice about you now they can see your differences? Why?

Put your group’s rocks together into the big fish bowl What does the bowl represent now? What do the ratios of the colors/rocks represent? Is 1 rock influential to the rest? Is 1 small fish bowl influential to the bigger bowl? How? Why? How would the bowl’s dynamic change when the colors change? For example, if all of them were blue? What if we add all the rocks into 1 even bigger bowl. What would this represent? Does this adequately show interactions between people? What if fish are added. What are the new dynamics? How did they change?

1) How did you feel while doing the activity? Connect! 2) How does this activity relate to individuals? Teams? Diversity? 3) What harm can come from prejudices? 4) Is diversity a good or bad thing? Why? 5) How does diversity affect you and your college experience? Career?
