Welcome to the 2018-2019 Altadena Middle School Year! Brian Schanerman Kyrene Teacher for 29 years Arizona Highly Qualified Math Teacher Middle School Math Certification

Arizona Mathematics Standards 6th Grade Curriculum Using ratios and proportional relationships to problem solve. The Number System: Multiplication and division of fractions, common factors and multiples, understanding rational numbers. Algebraic expressions and equations with one variable. Understanding, comparing and computing perimeter, area, surface area and volume. (2 Dimensional vs 3 Dimensional Shapes). Using statistics to calculate probability.

Arizona Mathematics Standards Seventh Grade Curriculum Ratios and Proportional Relationships. The Number System with Rational and Irrational Numbers. Geometry: Create Geometric Shapes, Angle Measurement, and 3D Surface Area and Volume. Algebraic Expressions and Equations with fractions and decimals. Algebraic Expressions and Equations with one solution, infinite solutions and no solution. Probability using random sampling and hypothesizing using the data.

Arizona Mathematics Standards Eighth Grade Curriculum Comparing Rational vs Irrational Numbers: Which is which and using rational numbers to approximate the value of an irrational number. Algebraic Equations using radicals, integer exponents, fractions and decimals. Using prior knowledge of proportional relationships to calculate linear equations. Analyzing and solving linear equations, inequalities and systems, (pairs of simultaneous equations) using the slope intercept and point slope formulas. Comparing the various methods of solving systems: substitution, elimination and graphing. Define, evaluate and compare functions when comparing quantities. Geometric congruence and similarity, (Proportionality). Understanding and applying The Pythagorean Theorem. Volume of Cylinders, Cones and Spheres. Patterns involving Bivariate Data, i.e. Ice Cream sales vs Outdoor Temperature. Comparing Probability Models.

Our Class Pets Hippo and Zippo are our two class pets! They are hairless guinea pigs who love people, love to eat and most of the time love each other. They are always looking for weekend foster parents who would like to care for them. This is dependent on responsible students who would like to host them for a weekend. The boys are quite self sufficient but do need to be fed when they are hungry and cared for when they want attention. Hippo and Zippo are very lovable and affectionate and will let you know by talking to you. They are also in need of generous donations of Timothy Hay, guinea pig food and bedding, along with fresh peppers, (red, green or yellow), lettuce, raw spinach, cucumbers and carrots. These items are greatly appreciated! 

Zippo and Hippo look forward to meeting all their new friends!
