What is a Church? The most sacred place for Christians Where the community comes together for worship and fellowship It also means a “gathering of people”

Architecture The exterior architecture of a church does not always clearly tell the church denomination Gothic style church may be, among others, Catholic, Anglican, or Presbyterian An urban storefront church may be Lutheran, Assembly of God, or Catholic

How can we know the denomination of a church?

Interior of a church The inside of a church is more telling about its denomination. A church with an altar in the middle and a pulpit on the side tend to be Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox, or perhaps Lutheran.

Statues Statues of Jesus, Mary, and saints are likely to be Catholic If they are icons it is most likely to be Orthodox

Icons Religious images or paintings that are traditional among many Eastern Christians

Protestant Churches Tend to be simpler in ornamentation like Orthodox Some with just a pulpit in the center of the sanctuary

All Christian Denominations Agree that how God is worshipped is more important than where God is worshipped In times of wars, persecution, or natural disasters, Christians have worshipped in any type of building available Outside in a meadow, forest, seashore, or desert

Holy Land Most of the Holy Land is located in the present State of Israel Bethlehem, where Jesus was born, Nazareth, where Jesus grew up, and the region of Galilee, where Jesus did much of his preaching, are especially sacred
