The Great Apostle Luke 9:46 – 10:24

I. Four Attitude Adjustments for Reaching Others (9:46-62) A. He Turns Us from Pride to Humility (9:46-48) Luke 9:46-48 (NIV) 46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in My name welcomes Me; and whoever welcomes Me welcomes the One who sent Me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”

I. Four Attitude Adjustments for Reaching Others (9:46-62) B. He Turns Us from Tribalism to Cooperation (9:49-50) Luke 9:49-50 (NIV) 49 “Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in Your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.” 50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”

C. He Turns Us from Vengeance to Mercy (9:51-56) I. Four Attitude Adjustments for Reaching Others (9:46-62) C. He Turns Us from Vengeance to Mercy (9:51-56) Luke 9:51-56 (NIV) 51 As the time approached for Him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And He sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for Him; 53 but the people there did not welcome Him, because He was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[a]?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then He and His disciples went to another village. Footnotes: Luke 9:54 Some manuscripts them, just as Elijah did

D. He Turns Us from Security to Sacrifice (9:57-62) I. Four Attitude Adjustments for Reaching Others (9:46-62) D. He Turns Us from Security to Sacrifice (9:57-62) Luke 9:57-62 (NIV) 57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.” 59 He said to another man, “Follow Me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61 Still another said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” 62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

II. Five Action Items for Reaching Others (10:1-24) A. Pray Earnestly (10:1-2) Luke 10:1-2 (NIV) 10 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two[a] others and sent them two by two ahead of Him to every town and place where He was about to go. 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.” Footnotes: Luke 10:1 Some manuscripts seventy; also in verse 17

II. Five Action Items for Reaching Others (10:1-24) B. Go Meekly (10:3-4) Luke 10:3-4 (NIV) 3 ”Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.”

II. Five Action Items for Reaching Others (10:1-24) C. Seek Peace (10:5-8) Luke 10:5-8 (NIV) 5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house. 8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.”

II. Five Action Items for Reaching Others (10:1-24) D. Preach Boldly (10:9-16) Luke 10:9-16 (NIV) 9 ”Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town. 13 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[a] 16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.” Footnotes: Luke 10:15 That is, the realm of the dead

II. Five Action Items for Reaching Others (10:1-24) E. Rejoice Greatly (10:17-24) 17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.” 18 He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” 21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what You were pleased to do. 22 “All things have been committed to Me by My Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.” 23 Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

III. One Aim in Reaching Others (9:48; 10:16) Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me welcomes Him who sent Me. (9:48) Whoever listens to you listens to Me. Whoever rejects you rejects Me. And whoever rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me. (10:16)
