People were expecting the Messiah. Religion in Rome Jesus’s Teachings Early Christianity Romans were religiously tolerant. Rome expanded and took in people with many different religions. They did not force them to change into Roman religion. Very religious people – festivals and temples. They didn’t know which gods were real so they worshipped all gods so that they don’t offend anyone. They were strongly inspired by the Greek religion. They only banned religion when it became a political problem – Judaism. They defeated them repeatedly and eventually kicked them out of Jerusalem. They thought Jews offended Roman gods by refusing to worship them. Diaspora. From Judaism Came during a time when some Jews were very rigid and followed strict rules just for the sake of rules. People were expecting the Messiah. Most of what we know about Jesus come from the Bible, the holy book of Christianity – two parts: Old Testament and New Testament. Old Testament: About Jewish religion and Christianity’s Jewish roots. New Testament: about the life of Jesus and how we should follow God. Jesus created excitement wherever he went. His teachings challenged the authority of Roman and Jewish leaders.  crucified. The Twelve Apostles spread Jesus’ Teachings. Paul of Tarsus (St. Paul) was the most important person in spreading Christianity. He traveled throughout the Roman world. St. Paul told Christians that they did not have to follow most of the Jewish laws. Within a hundred years after Jesus’ death, thousands of Christians lived in the Roman empire. Christians were persecuted (were imprisoned and put to death) because Roman leaders thought that they would rebel. They refused to worship Rome’s gods. Emperor Constantine became a Christian and ended the ban of Christianity in the Roman empire. It later became Rome’s official religion.
