So…how do we get the energy they need to survive? Unit 5 Cell Energetics! Part 1: Energy & Intro So…how do we get the energy they need to survive?

Law of conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created or destroyed…just transferred/converted

Where on earth does energy originally come from?? Make sure to state energy comes from the sun (except in deep sea conditions where chemicals power life from sulfur vents…cool!)

Energy flow Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration Converts energy from the sun into energy stored in molecules (potential energy) Cellular Respiration Converts the potential energy from molecules into usable energy Make sure I stat they are interrelated and feed eachother

Adenosine Triphosphate Does it look familiar? Energy is stored in the BONDS (in this case we’re breaking the phosphate bonds) Recycled & reused

Phosphorylation Transfer of phosphate group AND energy Enzyme-mediated ATP Synthase (makes ATP) https://www.youtube.co m/watch?v=XI8m6o0gXD Y ATPase (breaks ATP)

So… Why? How? Easy way to store energy Easy way to access energy later Photosynthesis converts light energy into chemical energy (into monosaccharaides like glucose!) Cell respiration converts chemical energy (sugar) into ATP for mechanical energy!

Photosynthesis is how autotrophs harness and use light energy to make sugar and oxygen gas from carbon dioxide and water Light energy PHOTOSYNTHESIS 6 CO2 + H2O Carbon dioxide Water C6H12O6 O2 Glucose Oxygen gas What does it need? (Input) What does it make? (Output)

Cellular Respiration Cellular respiration is a 3-step process of breaking down glucose to produce ATP…and LOTS of it!!! What does it need? (Input) What does it make? (Output)

PS vs CR Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration Inputs: Outputs: Make a table!! Photosynthesis Plants & some bacteria Inputs: Light energy H2O CO2 Outputs: O2 C6H12O6 Cellular Respiration Plants & animals Inputs: C6H12O6 O2 Outputs: CO2 H2O ATP

Learning Check What are the inputs of Photosynthesis? What are the outputs of photosynthesis? What are the inputs of cellular respiration? What are the outputs of cellular respiration? What is the energy molecule for the cell? Starting from the sun…summarize how YOU get energy (ATP)
