DNA and Chromosomes

DNA and Chromosomes Target: I will be able to explain the relationship of DNA to chromosomes and genes and identify the parts of a chromosome. DNA is really large. To fit into the cell, it must coil up into chromosomes. When the DNA is coiled tightly in the nucleus, it is a chromosome. Histone: The protein that DNA coils tightly around. Chromosomes: cell structures that contain genetic information. Passed on from one generation of cells to the next. Located in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. Pg. 93

Chromosome DNA Histone

Parts of a Chromosome: 1. Gene: A section of DNA that codes for (provides the instructions for making) a protein. 2. Chromatid: one arm of a chromosome. A double stranded chromosomes has sister chromatids that are identical. 3. Centromere: The place where sister chromatids are attached.

DNA to Chromosomes Complete the worksheet and paste it in your notes so you can see the chromosome drawing below. Draw the structure of a chromosome and label all it’s parts (Centromere, Chromatid, Sister Chromatids, and Genes) Pg. 92
