Pt. 8 Depression, Dependence and Discipleship 2 Samuel 11:2–5: It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. . . . Then she returned to her house. And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.” Pt. 8 Depression, Dependence and Discipleship

Psalm 102:1-8 Hear my prayer, O LORD; let my cry come to you Psalm 102:1-8 Hear my prayer, O LORD; let my cry come to you! Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress! Incline your ear to me; answer me speedily in the day when I call! For my days pass away like smoke, and my bones burn like a furnace. My heart is struck down like grass and has withered;

I forget to eat my bread. Because of my loud groaning my bones cling to my flesh. I am like a desert owl of the wilderness, like an owl of the waste places; I lie awake; I am like a lonely sparrow on the housetop. All the day my enemies taunt me; those who deride me use my name for a curse.

For my days pass away like smoke “Every day feels purposeless, fleeting…” My heart is struck down like grass and has withered “I feel dead inside…” I forget to eat my bread. Because of my loud groaning my bones cling to my flesh. “I am not eating…I’m weak…” like an owl of the waste places; I lie awake; I am like a lonely sparrow on the housetop “I can’t sleep and I feel all alone…”

I am now a man of despair, rejected, abandoned, shut up in this iron cage from which there is no escape. – John Bunyan I could weep by the hour like a child, and yet I knew not what I wept for. – Charles Spurgeon I am now the most miserable man living. If what I feel were equally distributed to the whole human family, there would not be one cheerful face on the earth. – Abraham Lincoln

Psalm 55:4-8 My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen upon me. Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me. And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest- yes, I would wander far away; I would lodge in the wilderness; I would hurry to find a shelter from the raging wind and tempest.”

1 Timothy 5:23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.

Luke 10:33-34 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him.

Antidepressant medications are the best known and most popular of these treatments, but there are hundreds of proposed physical aids, and many of them can change the physical appearance of depression. They will not give you hope, but they may make you feel less miserable. – Ed Welch

1 Timothy 4:8 or while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

2 Peter 1:3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence

Psalm 146:3-4 Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish.

Approach your depression very carefully Approach your depression very carefully. It might be pointing to important matters of the heart that are crying out for attention. Ignore them and they will just call back later. – Ed Welch

Romans 8:34 Who is to condemn Romans 8:34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died- more than that, who was raised- who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

-Robert Murray McCheyne If I could hear Christ praying for me in the next room, I would not fear a million enemies.  Yet distance makes no difference.  He is praying for me.  -Robert Murray McCheyne

Psalm 102:24-26 They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away, but you are the same, and your years have no end. The children of your servants shall dwell secure; their offspring shall be established before you.
