About 3,000 Tejanos, Mexicans who claimed Texas as their home, made up most of the area’s population. Interactions between American Settlers and Mexico By 1830, Americans greatly outnumbered Mexicans in Texas. The Americans had not adopted Mexican practices, as promised. The U.S. had offered to buy Texas twice. They were turned down.

More Mexican Laws against American Settlers 1821- Colonists could bring slaves into Texas. 1823- The sale or purchase of a slave is forbidden by Mexican Government. 1827- The Coahuila y Tejas State legislature outlaws the introduction of additional slaves in Texas. Declares all children born to slaves to be free. 1829- Mexico abolishes slavery, but grants an exception in Texas. 1830- the Importation of slaves is made illegal. Write it Down

Martin De Leon Mexican Empresario Write it Down Mexican Empresario Settled 200 families in South Texas between Lavaca and Guadalupe River. Founded the town of Victoria in 1824. Victoria still exists today.
