Kums Dune-covered deserts found in southern- central Asia (such as Iran or Turkmenistan)

Alluvial Soil A rich soil made up of sand and mud deposited by moving water (such as in the Nile River.)

Wadis These are streambeds found in this region’s deserts that remain dry until a heavy rain; they are associated with flash floods.

Phosphate A chemical used in fertilizers; the nation of Morocco is one of the world’s leading producers.

Oasis A place in the desert where underground water surfaces; villages, towns, and cities developed around many Saharan oases.

Pastoralism The raising and grazing of livestock (sheep, goats, and camels) found in the Steppe climate regions of North Africa, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia.

Cereal Food grains such as barley, oats, and wheat; grown in agricultural areas throughout North Africa, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia.
