Do Now Is life all about you? Why or why not?

Ovid: From Metamorphosis Narcissus was fathered by a river god and a nymph. Narcissus turned into a very beautiful young man, whom everyone loved. However, there was no one to whom Narcissus would return affection. Since Narcissus denied everyone his love, the gods fated that Narcissus could never have anything that he loved. One day while Narcissus was hunting in the forest he went to get a drink. As he bent down to drink from the lake he fell in love with the reflection of himself. He was so awed by this person that he could not move. He tried to grab the image but couldn’t, which made him more infatuated with himself. Desperate to reach his own reflection, he fell into the water and drowned. On the edge of the lake where Narcissus died grew a beautiful flower.

TED Talks For this week you will get handouts to take notes on two different TED Talks Today we will watch our first one about narcissism http://www.ted.com/talks/wade_davis_on_endangered_cultures?language=en 22 minutes

Discussion What are the benefits of living in one place your entire life? What are the benefits of moving, once or twice or many times? Is world travel important? Why?

Exit slip – on back of note-taking handout Think about the Ted Talk and discussion we had today and reflect on what you learned. Do you still feel the same as you did at the start of class about narcissism? Do you think that travel is important? Why? (a paragraph or so)
