BASEAL Getting on and falling out - 3

L.O.1 To be able to use my skills for solving problems peacefully to help other people resolve conflict.

Dear Elly, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I just said it without thinking. I didn’t know that Martyn was standing behind the bookshelves listening to what I was saying. I know you told me never to tell anyone but I thought you wouldn’t mind if I told Honesty because she was crying. I thought if she knew that your mum and dad were going to split up then it would make her feel better now its happening to her. I am so sorry. Please talk to me tomorrow. I don’t think I can stand another day like today. Love, Becky.

Work in pairs to consider what Elly should do when she receives Q. Who are the characters in the story? Q. How did Elly find out what Becky had said? Q. Why do you think Elly was upset? Q. What did Elly do when she found out? Work in pairs to consider what Elly should do when she receives the letter. Work out a role-play of what she should do. Use the peaceful problem-solving process poster to help you.

At the end of each observation you should Now join with another pair to share your role-play. Each pair will take turns to observe the other pair’s role-play and will use the ADI (Advantages/Disadvantages/Interesting) sheet to record their thoughts. At the end of each observation you should identify ONE key point from the other pair’s ideas.

We will try this activity again but using this letter: Dear Majid, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I didn’t know you cared so much about it. If I did I would have made sure that you played the Artful Dodger in our play. I know you are good at acting but Miss Hall said that I must make sure I was fair. I thought that Alan would be good because he is small and can make people laugh. I still want to be friends. Ramjid Use role-play or write a script of how a conversation between Majid and Ramjid might develop - first if they do not use the peaceful problem solving process and then if they do. Remember the “hotting up” and “cooling down” responses!

Can you add to the list of “ hotting up / cooling down” responses to conflict you already have?
