Plantation Agriculture Wasteful Excessive cultivation of cotton despoiled the land Weaknesses of the plantation system 1. Relied on one crop 2. Repealed European immigrants 3. Significant population moved West

Continued Most white Southerners were non-slave-owning subsistence farmers. Most slaves in the South were owned by a few plantation owners. Most Southerners did not own slaves because they could not afford it.
