The Units FIRST SEMESTER UNIT #1: First 10 weeks we focus on… Narrative Reading (fiction/nonfiction) Narrative Writing UNIT #2: Second 10 weeks we focus on… Informative Reading Informative Writing SECOND SEMESTER UNIT #3: 1st 10 weeks we focus on… Reading and Analyzing Literature Writing Responses to literature UNIT #4: 2nd 10 weeks we focus on… Persuasive Reading Persuasive Writing 1) UNIT 1: Narrative reading and writing will focus on Structure, point of view and characters. 2) UNIT 2: Develop topic, create a thesis, conduct research –using primary and secondary sources 3) UNIT 3: Strong focus on THEME and TEXT STRUCTURE 3) UNIT 4: Persuasive Techniques

Currently on Unit 1: 1st 10 weeks Students read: Anchor Text: The House on Mango Street Short stories: Fiction & Nonfiction from California Collections Text Book Poetry Visual text: Photos, Paintings, Videos. Students write: Narratives: Fiction & Nonfiction Daily Journals: Examine concepts, and ideas connected to unit. WISDOM Panels: Analyze and write about THEME, PLOT, FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE, and WRITER’S CRAFT. *Grammar & Academic Vocabulary is integrated in the unit

Classwork consist of: Journal notebooks: Daily writing related to Anchor Texts Reading: Novels, short stories, informational & persuasive texts, plays, poetry, visual text, speeches. Essay Writing: Narratives, Expository & Persuasive essays WISDOM Panels: Literary presentations. Students analyze and present on THEME, PLOT, FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE, & WRITER’S CRAFT. Vocabulary Development: Academic vocabulary from novels, and SAT Vocabulary Lessons Grammar Practice: Online resources like NoRedInk & Quill Daily explanation by the students of standards-based concepts as related to the lesson of the day Student Binders: Portfolios archiving the reading and writing process. Classwork consists of the following (wisdom panels each student takes a role when examining a text

Homework Meaningful extension of in class learning Reading Writing Preparing Wisdom Panels Daily vocabulary & Grammar practice starts in class then completed at home. Online resources: -SAT Vocabulary: vocabtest.com -Grammar: NoRedInk & Quill

Purpose of Required Materials? Keeps every Unit ORGANIZED 1 ) Binder: 1½ inch wide with 3 metal rings inside Notebook: 1 subject bound notebook 70 to 100 pages (for journals, notes, and grammar practice) 3) Binder Paper: 100 pages 5 Dividers: Plastic dividers must have pockets (NO PAPER DIVIDERS) Pencil Pouch: Must have 3 holes. Students place items 6-9 inside the pencil pouch 6) 4 Highlighters: 4 different colors 7) 3 Pencils: No mechanical pencils 8) Pencil Sharpener 9) Eraser   HELPS STUDENTS STAY ORGANIZED PLUS THEY DON’T HAVE TO ASK OTHER STUDENTS FOR SUPPLIES. A BIG BONUS IN HELPING THEM TO STAY FOCUSED
