Get the work done (Unemployability skills now replaced by Foundation Skills ) The Core Skills for Work Developmental Framework (the CSfW) describes a set of non-technical skills, knowledge and understandings that underpin successful participation in work. Participation in work could be as an employee, as someone who is self-employed, or as a volunteer. This set of non-technical skills, often referred to as generic or employability skills, contribute to work performance in combination with technical or discipline specific skills and core language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills. As illustrated in Figure 1, work performance is also influenced by a range of factors relating to the context in which the skills are being applied. The term ‘work’ is used throughout the CSfW in the broadest sense of “activity that is directed at a specific purpose, which involves mental or physical effort”. The combination of LLN skills as detailed in the Australian Core Skills Framework and Core Skills for Work is referred to as Foundation Skills in the Vocational Education and Training Sector. In the school sector these two types of skills are described as General Capabilities and in the higher education sector they are referred to as Graduate Attributes. Fees and Refund Policy Fees - you may be required to pay your fees to your school, which is a delivery site for the RTO Tamworth 90162. Refunds - students who withdraw from the course during the year may be entitled to a pro-rata (proportional) refund of their course fee. Fees and Refund Policy for Vocational Educational Courses   Fees are set by the individual faculty area. They are reviewed annually as part of the annual budgeting process. All fees are payable at the Front Office. Students having difficulty meeting their fee commitments should speak with the Principal to organise alternative arrangements. Students who leave during the year may be entitled to a pro-rata (proportional) refund of their course fee. This will be in line with school policy. Competency Based Assessment You will be deemed either Competent or Not Yet Competent Competency Achievement leads to an AQF qualification This means you must perform a task to industry standard Your teacher will provide you with a range of tasks for you to demonstrate your competence against set performance criteria. You will be advised when and how you will be assessed. Tasks may include practical and/or written work, and gathering of evidence for an e-Portfolio A copy of all your completed assessment evidence will be retained by the school Courses within Industry Curriculum Frameworks are competency based courses.   In a competency based course, your performance is judged against a prescribed standard determined by industry – not against the performance of other students. Competence incorporates all aspects of work performance, including problem solving and the capacity to apply knowledge and skills in both familiar and new situations. Assessment involves the integration of skills and knowledge and attitudes. You will be judged either competent or not yet competent. There is no pass / fail. This judgement is made on the basis of evidence that may be in a variety of forms e.g. written tests, practical demonstration, portfolio or assignment. If you are judged as not yet competent then your teacher will tell you how you can improve and will negotiate another opportunity for you to demonstrate your competence. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) & Credit Transfer If you have: Previous work or life experiences Completed all or part of a similar course with TAFE or another RTO You need to: Provide evidence eg certificate/competency record Apply to your teacher who will assess your skills to ensure they meet industry standards Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the recognition of a person’s current skills and knowledge acquired through prior learning from other training, work or life experience.   If you have already completed all or part of a similar vocational course elsewhere, perhaps at TAFE or another school, or perhaps developed the necessary skills at work, your previous results and knowledge may be recognised, and you may not have to repeat that training and assessment. Recognition of Prior Learning Process If you wish to claim RPL, you must complete the ‘Student Application for RPL’. (Please see your trainer/teacher for the application form) You will need to produce sufficient evidence e.g. a result notice …. or a portfolio of evidence from the workplace The delivery site/school’s VET Coordinator or delegate will support the teacher in making the initial determination of your claim for RPL claim. RPL will only be granted for competencies where you are able to demonstrate achievement of all of the learning outcomes / performance criteria for that unit of competency. You would then be exempted from undertaking the training and assessment for that unit of competency. Examinations The HSC examination is optional for VET students… …BUT if you wish to obtain an ATAR, you MUST DO THE HSC EXAM. You may be required to complete examinations throughout the course. These will be used to determine an estimate for your HSC if required in the event of an accident or misadventure. Results and Records Results from assessments are recorded by your teacher and entered in the electronic system called NESA Schools Online Records of your progress are available from your teacher Students can access completed competencies and transcripts after course completion at the USI website Competency Records   A competency record will be kept by your teacher and this record forms a permanent record of all units of competency demonstrated. Achievement of elements within units of competency may also be progressively recorded by your teacher. Students may request to see this record at any time to determine their progress and seek advice about options for further training and assessment if deemed not yet competent for any unit of competency. NESA Record of School Achievement (RoSA) VET courses will be listed on your RoSA The relevant AQF qualification will be listed – e.g. ‘Certificate’ or ‘Statement of Attainment’ No mark will be listed (unless students undertake the written HSC examination) Qualification Certification Higher School Certificate Record of Achievement Courses within vocational framework courses will be listed on the Higher School Certificate Record of Achievement, together with the unit value of the course. No mark will be listed for the achievement of competency but the Record of Achievement will refer to the relevant Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) ‘Certificate’ and/or ‘Statement of Attainment’, which will be issued separately. For students who undertake the written HSC examination, a scaled examination mark will be recorded on the HSC Record of Achievement. No school-based assessment mark will be recorded. The Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards holds details of competencies achieved and HSC results for a period of 30 years to which students have access if required. Work Placement Compulsory for most VET students in NSW If you do not complete work placement you will not have the HSC units recognised by NESA. This may mean that you will not receive your preliminary or HSC. Usually 70 hours – 35 hours Preliminary and 35 hours HSC course for a 2 unit course Usually organised by a work placement service provider Students must NOT be paid as DoE insurance cover will be invalid for a student who accepts payment. May lead to employment Your teacher will deem you ‘work ready’ before you can participate in work placement Work Placement Work placement is a mandatory requirement for all Board Developed VET courses. Failure to complete work placement in either the Preliminary or HSC year will render the student ineligible for the award of a Preliminary and HSC credential. Under some circumstances students’ part-time work, in an appropriate workplace, may be used to fulfil work placement requirements. A specific Student Placement Record form is to be used by students wishing to have their concurrent work recognised for the purposes of work placement. Complaints and Appeals Complaints - If you are unsatisfied with any part of your course, you are encouraged to resolve the complaint through your usual school processes. Appeals – If you would like to question an assessment decision, follow the school process starting with a discussion with your teacher. If not resolved at a school level, contact should be made with RTO management. Complaints and Appeals   Complaints arise when a student is not satisfied with an aspect of service and requests action to be taken to resolve the matter. Appeals arise when a student is not satisfied with a decision made. Appeals can relate to assessment decisions but they can also relate to other decisions, such as whether to exclude a learner from a program. Students are encouraged to resolve complaints and appeals through the school’s complaint mechanism.
