Dementia, Depression, and Delirium in Aging There are approximately 5.1 million Americans 65 years and older with dementia. 1 in 8 persons 65 and over and nearly 50% of all persons over the age of 85 have some type of dementia. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and the third most expensive disease after cardiovascular disease and cancer. CAM Screen for Delirium (Confusion Assessment Method) 1 + 2 + (3 or 4) 1=Acute Onset & Fluctuating course PLUS 2 = Inattention AND EITHER 3 = Disorganized Thinking OR 4 = Altered LOC (Most Common = HYPOACTIVE Form) Inouye et al.
