Update on Lodi High Cheerleading

Background Lodi High Cheerleading ended the 16 -17 school year $7,890 in debt. There was a threat of the district being taken to collections. To avoid this and to continue with cheerleading for the 17-18 school year, the bill was paid through Lodi High general fund with the caveat that the general fund would be paid back. At the end of February, cheer still owed Lodi High general fund $3,500. The debt has now been paid.

Student Fees The California Education Code (EC), as amended by Assembly Bill (AB) 1575 in 2012, provides that a pupil enrolled in a public school shall not be required to pay a pupil fee for participation in an educational activity. 3“Educational activity” is defined as an activity offered by a school, school district, charter school or county office of education that constitutes an integral fundamental part of elementary and secondary education, including, but not limited to, curricular and extracurricular activities. 4 “Pupil fee” is defined as a fee, deposit or charge imposed on pupils, or a pupil’s parents or guardians, including but not limited to: A fee charged to a pupil as a condition for registering for school or classes, or as a condition for participation in a class or an extracurricular activity, regardless of whether the class or activity is elective or compulsory, or is for credit. A security deposit, or other payment, that a pupil is required to make to obtain a lock, locker, book, class apparatus, musical instrument, uniform, or other materials or equipment. A purchase that a pupil is required to make to obtain materials, supplies, equipment, or uniforms associated with an educational activity. 5

Cheerleading Schools are required to provide a generic uniform Students involved in cheer choose to purchase uniforms and accessories at a cost of $1800 Students cannot be required to participate in fundraising Due to the increasing cost of sideline cheer, sports cheer seemed like a viable option because there would be a CIF regulated standard uniform

Solution Parents are forming a booster club to ensure the club pays all expenses. Lodi High will continue to investigate Sports Cheer, but it will not replace sideline cheer. Sideline cheer will continue for the 2018-19 school year.
