Srimad Bhagavatam A Second Canto Module One Review Bhakti-vaibhava Ajana Suta Academy www.jayarma.us/archives/godfather-diploma

Module One Sukadeva Goswami to Maharaja Pariksit SB 2.1 - The First Step in God Realization SB 2.2 - The Lord in the Heart SB 2.3 - Pure Devotional Service: The Change in Heart

SB 2.1 - The First Step in God Realization What is the “first step in God realization”? Would you agree that two more “steps” are described in this module? If so what are they? If not what are the other steps?

tasmād bhārata sarvātmā bhagavān īśvaro hariḥ SB 2.1.5: O descendant of King Bharata, one who desires to be free from all miseries must: hear about, glorify and also remember the Personality of Godhead, who is the Supersoul, the controller and the savior from all miseries. tasmād bhārata sarvātmā bhagavān īśvaro hariḥ śrotavyaḥ kīrtitavyaś ca smartavyaś cecchatābhayam

SB 2.1.5 is Sukadeva Goswami’s first answer to Maharaja Pariksit’s two questions. Then Maharaja asks: SB 2.1.22: The fortunate King Parīkṣit, inquiring further, said: O brāhmaṇa, please describe in full detail how and where the mind has to be applied and how the conception can be fixed so that the dirty things in a person's mind can be removed.

What does Goswami tell him? (Hint: VR)

What is that Bija-mantra? SB 2.1.17 — After sitting in the above manner, make the mind remember the three transcendental letters, and by regulating the breathing process, control the mind so as not to forget the transcendental seed. What is that Bija-mantra?

2.1.22 — King Parīkṣit, enquired: Please describe in full detail how and where the mind has to be applied.

2.1.26-28   — Persons who have realized it have studied that the planets known as P_____ constitute the bottoms of the feet of the universal Lord, and the topmost planetary system, known as S________, is the head of He who has one thousand heads. His palate is the director of water, V_____. The o_____ is His waist, and the h_____ and m______ are the stacks of His bones. Varieties of b____ are indications of His masterful artistic sense. 2.1.2 – “In the revealed scriptures there are two nomenclatures for the householder’s life. One is g_______, and the other is g________. The first are those who live together with wife and children but live transcendentally for realizing the ultimate truth. The second, however, are those who live only for the benefit of the family members, extended or centralized, and thus are envious of others.

2.1.8 - Medical books of anatomy or physiology are available in the market, but ____ (Hint: bhagavata) 2.1.11 By offenseless chanting and hearing of the holy name of the Lord, one becomes acquainted with the ____ of the Lord, and then with the _______ of the Lord, and then with the _______, etc. (Hint: NOI 7 & 8) 2.1.13-14 – What is the seventh offense to the chantiong of the Holy Name. Explain its severity. Are there formal rituals, or favorable conditions, which are required to be carried out for successful results from hearing SB? 2.1.17 – At what age should one leave his comfortable home and respectable position?

2.1.17 - One who is not able to chant directly the holy name of the Lord, as recommended above, can easily chant _________ Fully controlling the breathing air in Sanskrit is called p_________. 2.1.20 - The pure devotee of the Lord knows the art of converting everything into its spiritual existence by this service attitude, and only in that devotional way can the theory of p______ism be perfected. 2.1.26 - The universe is divided into fourteen planetary systems. Seven planetary systems, called Bh__, Bh___, S____, M__, J___ , T___ and S___ , are upward. There are also seven planetary systems downward, known as A____, Vi____, Su____, Tala____, Maha____, Rasa____and Pa____,

SB 2.2 The Lord in the Heart SB 2.2.4  — When there are ample earthly flats to lie on, what is the necessity of _____ ? When one can use his own arms, what is the necessity of a _____? When one can use the palms of his hands, what is the necessity of ______? When there is ample covering, or the skins of trees, what is the necessity of _______?

SB 2.2.6 — Thus being fixed, one must render service unto the S______ situated in one’s own heart by His omnipotency. 10 - On His chest is the K________ jewel. 21 — Thereafter the bhakti-yogī should push the life air up between the e______ , and then, blocking the s______ outlets of the life air, he should maintain his aim for going back home, back to Godhead. 24 - The polar star of the universe and the circle thereof is called the Śi______ circle.

Why is the path through the different planetary systems being described?

SB 2.2.36 tasmāt sarvātmanā rājan  hariḥ sarvatra sarvadā śrotavyaḥ kīrtitavyaś ca  smartavyo bhagavān nṛṇām O King, it is therefore essential that every human being hear about, glorify and remember the Supreme Lord, the Personality of Godhead, always and everywhere. There are nine processes of Bhakti yoga. They are all competent to deliver the devotee, but one of them is especially essential. Which one? This especially essential one is solidified by which other one?

Pure Devotional Service: The Change in Heart SB 2.3 Pure Devotional Service: The Change in Heart SB 2.3.1 — Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Mahārāja Parīkṣit, as you have inquired from me as to the duty of the intelligent man who is on the threshold of death, so I have answered you.

One who desires a long span of life should worship the demigods known as the Aśvinī-kumāras, and a person desiring a strongly built body should worship the earth. One who desires stability in his post should worship the horizon and the earth combined. SB 2.3.10 — A person who has broader intelligence, whether he be full of all material desire, without any material desire, or desiring liberation, must by all means worship the supreme whole, the Personality of Godhead. What is the Sanskrit for this verse? Remember in which chapter it occurs.

SB 2.3.13 — Śaunaka said: The son of Vyāsadeva, Śrīla Śukadeva Gosvāmī, was a highly learned sage and was able to describe things in a poetic manner. What did Mahārāja Parīkṣit again inquire from him after hearing all that he had said? SB 2.3.19 — ”Men who are like d___, h___, c_____ and a____ praise those men who never listen to the transcendental pastimes of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the deliverer from evils.” Why are university students compared to dogs? SB 2.3.22 — The eyes which do not look at the symbolic representations of the Personality of Godhead Viṣṇu are like those printed on ________.

SB 2.3.24 — Certainly that heart is st___-fr____ which, in spite of one’s chanting the holy name of the Lord with concentration, does not change when ecstasy takes place, tears fill the eyes and the hairs stand on end. Purport:  We should note with profit that in the first three chapters of the Second Canto a gradual process of development of devotional service is being presented. In the First Chapter the first step in devotional service by the process of hearing and chanting has been stressed, and a gross conception of the Personality of Godhead in His universal form for the beginners is recommended.

By such a gross conception of God through the material manifestations of His energy, one is enabled to spiritualize the mind and the senses and gradually concentrate the mind upon Lord Viṣṇu, the Supreme, who is present as the Supersoul in every heart and in every atom of the material universe.  But in the Third Chapter further development is prescribed after one has actually reached the stage of Viṣṇu worship, or pure devotional service, and the mature stage of Viṣṇu worship is suggested herein in relation to the change of heart.

Therefore real, steady bhāva is definitely displayed in the matter: (kṣānti), (avyārtha-kālatvam), (nāma-gāne sadā ruci), (prītis tad-vasati sthale), (virakti), (māna-śūnyatā). One who has developed all these transcendental qualities is really possessed of the bhāva stage, as distinguished from the stonehearted imitator or mundane devotee.

T/F - Tears, trembling, faltering of the voice can manifest from hearing and chanting in the person of a devotee who is Nama-aparadhi?

Tpp-bv.docx Is there a difference in the ultimate issue between a nitya-siddha and a sadhana-siddha? Why is Deity worship so important especially for householders? Can one maintain a temple at home? If not, what should he or she do?

Module One Thank you! Hare Krsna!
