Trembling At My Word Isaiah 66:1-2

Lessons From Israel Without excuse God brought Israel out of Egypt with a mighty hand (Ex. 13:16) At Mt. Sinai (Ex. 19) Moses meets with God (3-6) Interaction (7-9) Further instructions from God (10-15) The people trembled (16) [“all the people] Unfortunately, the people turned to idolatry at the very place they had earlier trembled (Ex. 32:1-4)

Southern kingdom facing judgment For not acknowledging what (and more) is mentioned in these two verses A steadfast refusal (66:4) A few will be spared (“humble and contrite f spirit, and who tremble at My word” cf. 66:5)

Turning from God to idolatry Cf. Romans 1:21-23 Jeremiah (followed Isaiah chronologically). Chapter 10 contains a satire of idolatry (echoes Isa. 44:14-17) vv. 8 and 14 – the people are stupid; without knowledge. In pride they lifted up themselves above God’s revelation and covenant v. 18 – God’s solution was to sling them out of the land v. 23 – In contrast, they need to learn the way of man is not in himself Cf. Psalm 115:1-8

Today’s Situation The 1st c. sounds like the 21st c. (Rom. 3:9-18) Let us reflect on what Isaiah said Be “humble and contrite of spirit” (Psa. 34:18; Isa. 57:15; Matt. 5:3; James 4:6, 10) “Tremble at My word” The power of God unto salvation (Rom. 1:16) Sharper than any two edged sword (Heb. 4:12) One day the standard for judgment (Jn. 12:48) We should earnestly have: A longing to hear it (Matt. 5:6); a desire to believe it (Heb. 11:6); a determination to obey it (Phil. 2:12)
