Reality Check – The Youth Challenge There are about 20 million youth (ages15-34) in SA They account for 36% of the total population. The SA total population is estimated to be about 56 million. Youth unemployment is high Educational and health outcomes are not where they are supposed to be. The key issue is youth inclusion

END GAME The NYP 2020 envisions “empowered young people who are able to realise their full potential and understand their roles and responsibilities in making a meaningful contribution to the development of a non-racial, equal, democratic and prosperous South Africa.” NYP 2020 defines youth development as “an intentional, comprehensive approach that provides space, opportunities and support for young people to maximize their individual and collective creative energies for personal development as well as development of the broader society of which they are an integral part”. The end state should be Human Development – “ a process of enlarging peoples choices… Formation of human capabilities, [and] …the use the people make of their acquired capabilities”

MEANS TOWARDS THE ASPIRATIONAL ENDS Develop a Youth Development Index for SA An Annual Youth Development Convention to reflect on progess made to advance Youth Development and as a generative space on theory and praxes and answer the question – what more needs to be done to evolve and deepen youth development? Fashion a Quadruple Helix - connect Academia, Business, Civil Society & Government - on Youth Development Establish a Knowledge Hub – Research Laboratory – to support the generation of the YDI and support the Quadruple Helix and the Youth Convention Fashion Collaborative Partnerships and Networks

What will Sustain the Convention Creation of a culture of dialogue, solidarity and community Modelling qualitative agency for youth development that is: Authentic Unique in its identity and focus in ameliorating the quality of life of young people – deliberate and purposive agency Self-reflective and self-corrective and exercises engaged leadership Democratic and advances the ethos of egalitarian development
