Ecology Jeopardy

What do you call the variety of species that live in an ecosystem? biodiversity

What does a high level of biodiversity do to the stability an ecosystem? Increases it

Changes in climate (weather over a long period of time) can affect biodiversity

Changes in population size can be caused by Births and deaths AND Immigration/emigration

What type of organism can photosynthesize Producer Autotroph plant

Which nutrient is most important for healthy soil? nitrogen

Changes in the population of an ecosystem are usually caused by…. Natural processes

What are TWO biotic factors that oxygen travels through Plants (exit through photosynthesis) Animals (enters through cellular respiration)

What is ONE abiotic factor oxygen travels through air

Changes in climate do not affect an ecosystem much beacuse They occur slowly.

What level of a pyramid gets the least amount of energy? Top level consumers

How would hunting destroy an ecosystem? Food web falls apart

Why would a new species, not native to an ecosystem, be a threat to other organisms living there? No natural predators

Energy pyramids show… The amount of energy at each trophic level.

Food chains/Webs show…. Feeding relationships.

What is the rule of 10? Only 10% of energy is passed through each trophic level.

How is most energy lost? As heat

Define carrying capacity. The amount of organisms an ecosystem is capable of carrying.

If human activity destroys an ecosystem, why would that limit genetic adaptations? Not enough time to reproduce and have a new population adapt

What is habituation? When a behavior becomes a “Habit” and the organism no longer reacts

What occurs when something is magnified? It is made larger

What occurs when something is biologically magnified? The effects on living organisms are made larger

What is trawling?

More carbon in the atmosphere causes… Increased heat Increased sea levels

Besides the sun, what 2 things are essential to a strong food web? Producers decomposers
