The Ontario Application Process All Applications to OCAS Ontario College Application Service Application cost - $95 For 5 programs – no more than 3 at any one college Additional programs are not possible All applications are done on-line At home or in Guidance Application due date February 1, 2019 for equal consideration with all applicants (even if you aren’t starting until January 2019 Should be done before Christmas holidays

Communication You must have an e-mail address before you apply (it should be suitable) If you change your email, notify Guidance and OCAS) Check it often after you apply This is the way OCAS, the colleges and Guidance prefer to communicate with you

What the school sends October Demographic information Final marks of completed grade 9 to 12 courses First and second semester courses you are taking Community involvement and literacy test info November Application data sent to colleges February First semester final marks Update semester 2 courses April Second semester mid term marks July 2019 Final second semester marks Proof of graduation

Admission Date All high school applicants will hear their admission decision on or after February 1, 2019 Most applicants must respond to an offer of admission by May 1, 2019 or lose their spot Applicants should check their offers of admission for exact deadline dates.

Admission Requirements Different programs and colleges have different required courses – English, Math and Science There are recommended courses as well for each program Admission may be based on: All grade 11 and 12 marks OR only required courses Admission is based on formulas individualized and set by each college Research on ontariocolleges.ca and on individual college websites – it is the student’s responsibility to completely research your program choices – especially highly competitive programs

Admission Requirements Highly Competitive Programs This is a program where there are more qualified applicants than the program’s capacity These programs don’t usually accept applications after February 1 Consider applying for another program as well Consider applying at a more remote college Strive to get the highest marks you can achieve (the cut-off could be much higher than the minimum marks required)

Multiple Offers of Admission You may be offered admission to several or ALL of your 5 choices You may only accept ONE offer You must respond to OCAS with the program you wish to accept If you accept a second program, the first will be cancelled

Types of College Programs Certificate Program – 1 year Regular Diploma – 2 years Technician Advanced Diploma – 3 years Technologist

Types of College Programs Graduate Certificate must already have a college certificate or diploma Bachelor’s Degree - 4 years University admission requirements (6 4U or 4M courses) Collaborative Program joint education between college and university – you may receive both a diploma and a degree.

Co-op Programs Many programs have a co-op component. This costs extra money. There is no guarantee that you will get a co-op placement. The extra money gives you access to the co-op employer list. Many co-op placements are paid positions which can offset the cost of your education.

Financing Your Education Scholarship Seminars Early December You will receive an e-mail notification of the exact dates and times Make sure you have a valid e-mail on file with the guidance office OSAP – Ontario Student Assistance Program This is a loan program. You will have to pay the loan back eventually. You apply on-line and we will be holding an OSAP seminar in the spring. Scholarships and Awards – These are cash awards given to students for educational expenses. They are usually based on academic achievement (good marks) but financial need may also be a consideration. Check out each college web site for more information about specific scholarships and awards. Bursaries – These are cash awards given to students based on financial need but sometimes good marks are considered. See page 12 of the Ontario College Guide for more information about financing your college education. It outlines some of the major scholarships and awards. December 16, 2005 – If you apply and pay on-line by this date your name will be entered in a draw to win up to $2500. See page 9 of the College guide.

There are Business awards based on the students with the highest marks in grade 12 business classes: Accounting, Economics and Organizational Studies Thames Valley School Board Awards Nominated by the school Thames Valley Education Foundation Award Ernie McTavish Award – awarded to a student who has overcome great difficulties while in school
