Department of Computer Science Department of Biological Sciences Specifics Department of Computer Science Department of Biological Sciences New apprenticeships Common Entry Engineering 5-year MEng STEM Scholarships www.cit.ie

Department of Computer Science Key Points Common curriculum in year one, allows students to switch in year two. (Note 1) Two L8 degree streams; Software and Information Technology. (Note 2) Two L7 degree streams; Software and Information Technology. (Note 3) Up to 9 months’ Work Placement (Note 4) Scholarships including the Women in IT Scholarship sponsored by McKesson (Note 5) Master’s degree and PhD opportunities in the department Note 1: If they have the CAO entry points or have excelled in first year if they don’t. All students are facilitated. Note 2: Software = BSc (Hons) Software Development and BSc (Hons) Computer Systems. IT = BSc (Hons) IT Management Note 3: Software = BSc Software Development. IT = BSc Information Technology Note 4: Normally paid employment Note 5: The McKesson scholarship is valued at €3k a year, each year for 4 years. Awarded to the female student who achieved the highest Leaving Certificate points in year of entry to the CS department. See the Department of Computer Science for further details: http://cs.cit.ie www.cit.ie

Department of Biological Sciences Key Points The Association of Nutrition have accredited the BSc (Honours) in Nutrition & Health Science programme. Graduates will automatically be eligible to register as Associate Nutritionists with the Association for Nutrition (AFN) - http://www.associationfornutrition.org/. This is a remarkable achievement as the BSc (Honours) in Nutrition & Health Science in CIT, outside of the Human Nutrition programme offered by UCD, is the only programme in the Republic of Ireland to attain AFN accreditation. The Nutrition and Health Science programme has gone from strength to strength in recent years. This accreditation achievement will further enhance the range of employment opportunities available to NHS graduates. 18/02/2019 www.cit.ie

New Apprenticeships Manufacturing Analytical Chemistry Higher Certificate in Engineering - Manufacturing Engineering (Level 6) The Manufacturing Technician provides a technical support function for manufacturing operations, including troubleshooting equipment and process issues, validation and qualification activities of the manufacturing site through the creation and support of necessary validation documentation for equipment, process and product release. Bachelor of Engineering in Manufacturing (Level 7) A Manufacturing Engineer facilitates efficient operations within the production area, to optimise existing processes, implement new processes and to ensure that production goals are met. Analytical Chemistry Laboratory Apprentice (in development) L6 and L7 options 18/02/2019

Common Entry Engineering BEng (Hons) in Sustainable Energy Engineering will soon be added formally as a pathway option for Common Entry Engineering students. In practice, this option is already available. 18/02/2019

5-year MEng Students entering a number of level 8 engineering programmes will have the option to complete a 4-year BEng (Hons) or a 5-year MEng Decision to be made at the end of year 3 Two programmes currently approved in CIT BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons) in Biomedical Engineering Driven by the need to meet chartered engineer recognition requirements BEng (Hons) in Chemical Engineering already meets the chartered engineering requirement MEng option already in place for BEng (Hons) in Structural Engineering 18/02/2019

First Destinations Survey Girls in STEM Dispelling the myths Roadshows General Points First Destinations Survey Girls in STEM Dispelling the myths Roadshows Selected Awards and Features www.cit.ie

First Destinations Survey 2016 Key Points Faculty of Engineering & Science Graduates, 9 months after graduating 95.2% in employment or further study, or otherwise committed versus 4.8% looking for work €30k - €35k most frequent starting salary 91% of those in employment are in Ireland, 9% overseas 76% of those employed in Ireland work in Cork In summary Vibrant demand for STEM graduates across all disciplines Very significant capital investment in STEM industry planned for Cork => sustainable demand for graduates 18/02/2019 www.cit.ie

First Destinations Survey 2016 18/02/2019 www.cit.ie

Girls in STEM Key Points Approx. 70% of our students in Biological Sciences are female Approx. 30% - 50% female students in areas such as Interior Architecture, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science Lower percentages of female students in other areas Industry crying out for female engineers and scientists CHALLENGE FOR GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS: HOW CAN WE GET MORE GIRLS TO ACHIEVE THEIR POTENTIAL IN STEM? Interestingly, the CIT I WISH campus programme attracted applications from 333 TY girls….. 18/02/2019 www.cit.ie

Dispelling the myths Key Points “You can’t do engineering without honours maths.” Pass maths students have completed maths-intensive post graduate programmes in CIT. “STEM is for those who wish to specialise and accept the associated career limitations.” Many CIT STEM graduates specialise but many also become entrepreneurs, educators, consultants and business leaders. “Business provides a better preparation for a career in management.” STEM graduates can quite easily move into business management roles but business graduates cannot move as easily into specialist STEM roles. www.cit.ie

Roadshows Our next STEM Roadshow event will take place in CIT on Monday, 14th January 2019, at 7pm Many thanks to our hosting schools this year Midleton CBS Secondary School Coláiste an Chraoibhín, Fermoy Coláiste Pobail Bheanntraí Apologies to those schools who we could not reach this year Happy to consider running smaller events as required in schools 18/02/2019
