THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE, 1803 U.S. sought to buy New Orleans from France in order to protect the future use of the Mississippi R. as the country grew France offered the entire Louisiana Territory for $15 million. Purchase doubled the size of the U.S. Jefferson began the idea of expanding the U.S. from sea to sea in order to protect the U.S. from unfriendly borders
