Houses of Congress Using the following slides, complete the “Houses of Congress” graphic organizer. On slides 4, 5, and 6 you can copy the highlighted words for why terms are the length they are, and for who is in charge.

Term Length: Each position in government has a term, that is the length of time you may spend in that job before you must run for re-election. Senate House of Representatives Serve a 2 year term. UNLIMITED Serves a 6 year term. UNLIMITED

House of Representatives The 2 year term served by the members of the House of Representatives is based on the idea that they represent the wants and needs of the people in the district they represent. Representative are expected to meet with the voters in their Districts and understand what they want and need. Since the desires of the people can change frequently members of the House must run for and win their elections every two years.

Senate The 6 year term served by the members of the Senate is based on the idea that they represent the needs of the entire state they represent. Senators meet with the voters in their States at times, but they are primarily concerned with what will benefit the entire state the most. Since the state is a larger number of people and the job is a bigger one, members of the Senate keep their jobs longer than the HOR.

So who’s in charge? The Speaker of the House is the leader in the House of Representatives. The President pro Tempore is the leader in the Senate.

Congress Senate = Upper house House of Representatives = lower house

Define the three kinds of committees found in Congress.
