Physical Science Ch. 15: Energy
What is Energy? Energy is the ability of an object to do work. The SI unit for measuring energy is the Joule (J). 1J is the amount of energy required to move a 1N weight, 1 meter. Energy is transferred by a force moving an object through a distance.
Kinetic Energy Kinetic energy is energy of motion. The amount of kinetic energy depends on the objects mass and velocity. i.e. the bigger it is or the faster it is moving, the more kinetic energy it has.

Kinetic Energy Calculations KE = 1 mv2 KE is measured in 2 Joules (J) A 0.10 kg bird is flying at a constant speed of 8.0 m/s. What is the bird’s kinetic energy?
Potential energy is stored energy Potential energy is stored energy. It is the result of an objects position or condition. Examples: -a ball sitting on the top shelf -anything that is flammable -a skydiver ready to jump
Gravitational Potential energy depends upon an object’s mass, height, and acceleration due to gravity Examples GPE = mgh m = mass g = acceleration due to gravity 9.8m/s2 on Earth h = height
Gravitational Potential Energy A diver on a 10.0m high dive platform has a mass of 52.4 kg. Calculate her gravitational potential energy relative to the ground.
