Reedy River Basin Sewer Tunnel Project Update September 27, 2018
What is a Starter Tunnel? A starter tunnel is the initial tunnel excavation which is typically required to help setup the Tunnel Boring Machine and ancillary equipment for the entire excavation Starter tunnel length depends on: Type of Tunnel Boring Machine Ground Conditions (type and behavior) Contractor Means and Methods Worker safety is the overriding factor for all design and construction in tunnels
Access Shaft Aerial Access Shaft
Ground Conditions Necessitate Change in Construction Approach
Starter Tunnel Construction Excavation will involve drill and blast methods and mechanical excavation
Starter Tunnel – Ground Support Rib and lagging ground support required for mixed face conditions Excavation will involve drill and blast methods and mechanical excavation
Tunnel Shield Tunnel shield serves to protect workers in unstable ground Advanced in 4-foot intervals ahead of excavation
Cleveland Park Impacts Initial closure of public parking in Cleveland Park was 760 days. ReWa has worked with Contractor to reduce days parking lot will be closed to less than 760. Ability to maintain public accessibility to parking lot through Spring 2019 Ability to maintain public accessibility to portion of the parking lot following TBM excavation completion
Current Project Schedule Commence work at access shaft – September, 2018 Commence work for starter tunnel – Spring, 2019 TBM launch/Starter tunnel completion – Spring/Fall, 2019 Cleveland Park Restoration – TBD after finalizing design and sequencing Current Contractual Final completion –June 25, 2020 Actual Final Completion – TBD after finalizing design and sequencing
