Jeopardy Final Jeopardy Being “Real” “Desiree’s Baby” Realism in a nut shell “Desiree’s Baby” “The Stone Breakers” “O Captain! My Captain!” $100 $100 $100 $100 $100 $200 $200 $200 $200 $200 $300 $300 $300 $300 $300 $400 $400 $400 $400 $400 $500 $500 $500 $500 $500 Final Jeopardy

1 - $100 Realism is a cultural movement that impacts art, literature, and music. What does it seek to represent? (I’m asking for the general definition here.) It seeks to represent ordinary people and everyday activities or social realities.

1 - $200 What time period encompasses the Realism movement? I need the start and end dates. 1865-1915

1 - $300 What American event ushered in the beginning of Realism? The Civil War

1 - $400 What is the most important element of a Realist story? Character

1 - $500 What two art forms inspired the Realism style? Photography and journalism

2 - $100 Mark Twain said, “All you need in life is ignorance and confidence; then success is sure.” How does this quote represent Realism? Realists are cynics who depict moral problems and man’s greed; they would see this quote as being truthful and problematic.

2 - $200 What group of people were realists most concerned with depicting? Middle class

2 - $300 What do Realists often reject or choose not use in their stories? Symbols

2 - $400 True or False – Realists focus on providing an objective point of view. True

2 - $500 How do Realists feel about nature? They think nature is a force to be reckoned with; it wears down the human spirit

3 - $100 Why was Desiree suspected of being black? She was adopted, so her origins are mysterious

3 - $200 Provide two words that describe Armand’s attitude towards Desiree once he finds out his child is biracial. Cold, distant, cruel

3 - $300 Why is the ending of the story ironic? Armand is revealed to be biracial, not Desiree.

3 - $400 What is the theme of the story? Treating people differently based on racial heritage is wrong

3 - $500 What foreshadows Desiree’s death at the beginning of the story? The description of her and Armand’s home.

4 - $100 What is being depicted in this painting? A boy and a man creating gravel for roads.

4 - $200 What social class is depicted in the painting? How do you know this? Lower class/working class; only the lower class would do this back-breaking job, and their clothes are ripped

4 - $300 Why does the painter choose to depict the figures as faceless? If they’re faceless, they can represent all of the working class.

4 - $400 What is one realism characteristic present in this painting? Uses gritty/unpleasant details (torn clothes, calloused hands), it’s an honest depiction of the working class

4 - $500 How are the figures in this painting depicted with dignity? They are not complaining – they’re doing their work to survive. They’re also made slightly larger in scale.

5 - $100 What is the subject of the poem? A war ship returns home, and a crew member realizes his captain has died.

5 - $200 What does this poem metaphorically represent? The Captain represents Lincoln who was assassinated, with the ship being the united US after the civil war, and the narrator representing Whitman’s frustration at Lincoln’s pointless death.

5 - $300 What is the narrator’s two moods within the first stanza of the poem? Excited and then shocked

5 - $400 What is the reason the narrator repeats the phrase “for you” 5 times in the second stanza? This places emphasis on the captain and shows how frustrated the narrator is that the captain died before they could make it home.

5 - $500 What does exulting mean, and who is exulting in the poem? Exulting means to celebrate; the people on the shore are exulting

Final Jeopardy Why is Realism criticized? Realism seeks to depict the world honestly, but it is only depicted by those in power – primarily white, rich men. Other voices remain silenced, like those without power or minorities. For example, Kate Chopin is a white woman who discusses problems of race, which is something she’s never had to experience. She steals the experiences of others.
