UJ56 Iron Shielding Attenuation M. Brugger (FLUKA Team)
Quick Calculation We want to know the shielding attenuation for High-Energy Hadron Fluence (>20MeV), thus unfortunately we cant just take existing attenuation factors From other calculations we already knew that cm of Iron make us gain about a factor of 10 (in line-of-sight) Instead of doing a full UJ56 calculation, we decided to make a generic calculation to check the respective attenuation and extrapolate to the required shielding for the safe room 5/19/2010UJ56 Iron Shielding Attenuation2

Conclusion In addition to the 70cm on the tunnel side one would require about 100cm to reach <10 7 cm -2 y -1 The contribution streaming from the top will then become dominant, thus most probably there is a limit reached earlier A wall of 4x8x4m (U-shape) with 1m thickness and 3m height is about 50m 3 -> almost 400t of iron? One could do it possibly in stages (as a function of LHC-evolution)? A side note: 10 7 cm -2 y -1 still means that if there are 10 devices with a failure cross-section of 10 -7, then there are 10 failures in this period 5/19/2010UJ56 Iron Shielding Attenuation7
