IANAS Women for Science Focal Points Meeting Río de Janeiro, Brazil August, 20-22, 2018 Activities 2017 Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic Dr. Milena Cabrera, Focal Point

Activities that promote gender equality With the purpose of strengthening the work commissions and following the Program of Women for Science of the Inter-American Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS), invested 3 of the 4 women who became new members in 2017. Dr. Rosina de la Cruz Dr. Rosario Espinal Dr. María Virtudes Núñez Fidalgo

In the publishing area, we published the book Women and Motherland, authored by educator Eleanor Grimaldi Silie, Coordinator of the Education Commission of this Academy. This book was published to be disseminated in educational and academic centers, as a contribution to the new generations so that they may appreciate and learn about the valuable women who fought for national sovereignty.

Recognitions This Academy is honored to inform that the academician Mrs. Felicita Heredia, member of the Natural Sciences and Environment Commission, received three recognitions: 1) The President of the Republic awarded her the 2017 Dominican Woman Merit Medal, in Science and Technology; 2) The Oceanographic Institute, the Vermont Institute and the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) acknowledged her support to the Development of Environmental Sciences, and 3) The Dominican Foundation for Community Support, acknowledged her environmental support to Youth and to the Community in General.

In addition, Dr. Milena Cabrera, Member of the Health Sciences Commission and Focal Point of the Women for Science Program of the IANAS was acknowledged for the Circle of Interest in Medical-Scientific Training (CIFMEC) as the first Dominican pediatric gastroenterologist, and for her labor intensive trajectory in Dominican medicine.
