New Building for the Department of Chemistry Dear Guests! I am now going to give you a short overview of perhaps the most exciting topic in the current life of our department – the new chemistry building. February 2006

Real and Natural Sciences around Tartu Chemistry Biology Physics The Maarjamõisa Campus site University of Tartu is currently scattered around Tartu, no compact campus. This hinders collaboration. Also, many of the buildings are in a rather bad shape, among them the chemistry building. In the coming years it is planned to start developing the Maarjamõisa Campus, which would concentrate the real and natural sciences. Biomedicine Technology February 2006

The Maarjamõisa Campus The “Biomedicum” Chemistry Building UT Institute of Technology Further plans: Physics and Mat. Sci. Environmental sci. Genetics Biomedicine The work has started already – the technology building is ready. The first priority of the construction works for the coming years is the chemistry building. February 2006

The Chemistry building now ... The chemistry building has served us well for over half a century, but... difficulties with ventilation limited accessibility no large lecture rooms no elevator cannot be extended The building is not meeting the needs of contemporary teaching and research There has been very little from the government for keeping this current building in an acceptable shape. Almost all the renovation work that has been done has been accomplished with the funds of the faculty. February 2006

... and in few years The Project Draft is ready The new building will be modern in every respect The Project Draft is ready Elaboration of technical details is underway Construction will start in 2006-07 February 2006

Building Size Six floors Total area: 11833 m2 Useful area 7371 m2 For Department of Chemistry: ~5500 m2 Facilities: Lecture rooms, computer classes: 8-10 Student laboratories: 8 Research laboratories: 50 Offices for the staff: 90 Auxiliary rooms: 10 The current area: 4200 m2 The future building will be extendable February 2006

Overview of the Draft February 2006 The ground floor is mainly for teaching. There will be four large lecture rooms for 80-100 people. The large lecture room-block is suitable for organising conferences. February 2006

Overview of the Draft February 2006 The upper floors will be mainly for offices of the staff and reasearch labs. The building will be equipped with all technical communications necessary for work (gas lines, DI water system, ...) February 2006

Overview of the Draft The building will be equipped with all necessary auxiliaries: gas lines DI water system tanks for liquid Ar and N2 etc. The laboratories for specific reasearch are designed in close collaboration with the future users February 2006
