Tuesday work

Do Now: Literary Terms: epigraph (n) allusion (n) foreshadow (v) Please find your desk that you have been assigned. You will notice a team member sign at each table. On your desks, you will find copies of the new literary term study sheets we will be using. Please use our Do Now time to fill in the following words onto the appropriate lines. While you are working, I will be playing music from Ibo ceremonies. Please listen and enjoy while you work! Objectives: We will predict the tone and possible events of our novel through analysis of the cover art, epigraph, and title. We will analyze the main characters introduced through chapters 1 and 2. Agenda: Record vocabulary words Background on the Ibo Culture Analysis of cover art, epigraph, and title Reading of ch. 1-2 Set up character chart

Review the background info on Nigeria and Chinua Achebe Staple this document (you received it during the last unit) into your interactive notebook What important information do you recall from this document?

Background on the Ibo Culture Follow the link above to view a short powerpoint with images of the Igbo and some important cultural artifacts.

Analysis of Cover Art Open up the book to the first title page (put your first and last name and class period on the top of this page) On the rest of this page, write down any questions or observations you make Discuss with the individual sitting next to you.

Analysis of Epigraph Open to the epigraph page of your novel. Teacher will read it outloud Reread it silently to yourself, adding annotations as you read Class discussion of annotations, observations and inferences

Title Analysis Go to the second title page. In one short paragraph, predict what this title may foreshadow for the novel? What might the tone of this novel be like?

Class reading of Ch. 1-2 While we read chapters 1-2, make sure to ANNOTATE THOROUGHLY! You will be graded on the quality of your annotations throughout. Please annotate specifically for characterization. Look for quotes that describe both characters and the Ibo culture itself.

Closing Create a simple character chart to help you keep our characters organized. In your notebook, set up this document like the document to the right. Homework Read Chapter 3 making sure to annotate for characterization. There will be a reading check tomorrow! Join Google Classroom as well as make sure to check my website. Define the literary terminology and complete the study practice Write a title for each chapter. Write the titles directly into your book on the chapter’s beginning page. This will help you remember the sequence of events in the story when you are preparing for your final exam. Try to make a title that will help you recall the most important events or information in that chapter.

Wednesday Do now: Please complete the quiz that you picked up on your way into the classroom. There will be no talking for the first five minutes as you work. You will not be allowed to use your book for this quiz.

Wednesday Objective We will analyze the characterization of Okonkwo, Unoka, Nwoye, and the Ibo culture through a structured discussion called a literature circle. Agenda: Ch. 3-4 Reading Check Literature Circles Discussion

Literature Circles Round 1 Round Robin - each student in a circle shares the quote they believe best describes Okonkwo outloud.

Round 2 Teacher example for how to use the literature circle characterization chart: Quote Paraphrase the quote, putting it into your own words Make inferences and draw conclusions from this quote “Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness.” (p. 13) Okonkwo might not be ruthless and as unfeeling as he acts. However, he has allowed the fear of turning into his lazy father who was a failure that he pushes himself and those around him with an iron and unrelenting force. Okonkwo is obsessed with not turning into his father. This obsession is the driving force of his life. Every decision he makes is geared towards exuding every characteristic that his father didn’t. As he views his father as weak, he works hard to display only strength. In this way, he denies himself emotion, care, and tenderness even towards those he loves.

Round 3: Choose one person’s quote about Okonkwo from your group. Together, fill in the following boxes for that quote. You should all be writing the same information in these boxes.

Round 4: Work individually to continue filling in your organizer. Have at least one row completed for each character.

Journaling: Start a new journal entry. In what ways are Okonkwo and Unoka different? And in what ways are they similar?

Homework: Go to our Google Classroom. Use the notes posted for Subjects and Predicates. Write out your notes in the second section of your notebook in Cornell note format. Make sure to bring colored pencils, markers etc. Any item that you would like to use to make a poster.

Thursday/Friday Do Now Pick up the multiple choice practice on your way into the classroom. You will have five minutes to complete these questions.

Thesis writing A thesis statement is usually one sentence found in the introduction of an essay. The thesis statement is developed, supported, and explained throughout the course of the essay. It is the point of the essay.

Poster Creation Reread the description and rubric for this project. You will have the remainder of class to work on this poster. It is due Monday. No later!

Homework Study for grammar and vocabulary test. Complete your poster for your chosen character.
