Physical Properties of Matter Physical properties are used to help classify matter Physical properties= characteristics of a substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance
Examples of physical properties: 1. Temperature/Heat: a change in temperature can change the state of a substance without changing the substance. The temperature at which these changes occur tell us something about the substance. EX. Heated water turns to steam. This is a change of state, not a change of substance.
2. Melting/Boiling Points MELTING point= temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid. BOILING point= temperature at which a liquid boils FREEZING point= temperature at which a liquid changes to a solid 3. Density- measure of mass in a given volume DENSITY= MASS/VOLUME
4. Electric Conductivity= a substance’s ability to carry an electric current or conduct electricity EX. Metals can be very conductive (GOLD) 5. Thermal Conductivity= a substance’s ability to transfer heat 6. Magnetic Properties= ability to attract or repel other objects
