Project Details Using Oreos you will create a chart of the different phases of the moon During this project you will learn about each phase and depict what the moon looks like in each phase You will lable each phase on your paper plate after you glue the Oreos onto it Your final product should look similar to the picture
Diagram to understand the moon phases This diagram will help you to label the phases of the moon for your project
New Moon Occurs when the moon is positioned between the earth and the sun The three objects are in alignment The entire illuminated portion of the moon is on the backside of the moon, the half we cannot see
Waxing crescent Occurs after the new moon The sunlit portion is increasing, but less than half
First quarter Often called a “half moon” Happens when the moon is at a 90 degree angle with respect to the earth and the sun We see exactly half of the illuminated portion of the moon They other half is in a shadow
Waxing gibbous Occurs after the first quarter The sunlit portion is still increasing, but now is more than half
Full moon Occurs when the earth, moon, and sun are all in alignments, just like the new moon The moon is on the opposite side of the earth The entire sunlit part of the moon is facing us The shadowed portion is entirely hidden from view
Waning gibbous Occurs after the full moon (maximum illumination) The light is beginning to continually decrease
Third quarter Looks the same as the first quarter Is often called the half moon as well Happens when the moon is at a 90 degree angle We see exactly half of the moon illuminated and half in shadow
Waning crescent Follows the third quarter Wanes until the light is completely gone
