Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey By: Paige and Miracle

Basic Information Author: William Wordsworth Summary: The narrator visits the Bank of Wye five years after he visited as a child. He looks back and remembers his childhood, and realizes he is not the same now as he was then. Theme: memories of nature in childhood helps keep the adult mind sane Things to know: The poet address his sister in this poem. He says that the landscape before him are beauteous forms. At one point he personifies the tree. His sister reminds him of a younger image of himself.

Mood and Attitude? Mood: pensive, serene, thoughtful, tranquil Makes the reader become thoughtful as well Reminiscing; almost nostalgic as he looks back, bittersweet

How Does the Speaker Find Comfort? The speaker finds comfort in knowing that his sister will be shined on by the moon and blown on by the wind, so she will have that feeling to look back on whenever she is sad in the future. Also, whenever the speaker dies, she will remember how much he loved nature and will feel better and take solitude in that.

Childhood Remembrances? The narrator remembers visiting as a child He always found comfort in nature; it provided a break from large cities and the worrisome burdens of life He was more youthful and nature was his whole world He now appreciates it in a more subtle way; more mature gifts Nature now serves as an anchor to his “moral being” instead of feeding every desire

Form and Meter? Form: the physical structure of the poem Meter: a stressed and unstressed syllable pattern in a verse or in the lines of the poem In this poem: Blank verse Iambic pentameter

How Does Nature Influence the Individual? Quick side note: “What can people not control?” has been changed to “According to the speaker, the influence of nature…” The speaker feels as though nature grounds you Nature is always a peaceful escape from a burdensome life Keeps the adult mind anchored and helps find tranquility
