ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER-EEC PRESENTATION ON GREEN ENTREPRENEURSHIP: PRESENT AND FUTURE BY SIYAPHERA MAKUNGANYA (MSc student at Chancellor College) Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

EEC BRIEFLY What is Energy and Environmental Centre (EEC)? EEC is a Malawian led organization based in the Eastern Region, ZOMBA district in particular. We are friends of renewable energy (currently solar). Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 Mission? To facilitate the provision of clean, sustainable, affordable, reliable and secure energy and environmental technologies for national development while protecting the environment Vision? Provide affordable quality energy and clean environment for all Malawians Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 INTRODUCTION This study was undertaken to attempt understand the existence of Green Entrepreneurship (GE) in Micro and small scale entrepreneurs Micro entrepreneurs (0-9 employees) Small scale entrepreneurs (10-49 employees) Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 CRITICAL QUESTION What is Entrepreneurship? What is Green Entrepreneurship? Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Entrepreneurship defined Entrepreneurship is creating and building something of value from practically nothing. - That is, entrepreneurship is the process of creating or seizing an opportunity and pursuing it regardless of resources currently controlled (Baron & Shane, 2005, p4 ) Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 Definition continue… Entrepreneurship, as a field of business, seeks to understand how opportunities to create something new (e.g., new products or services, new markets, new production processes or raw materials, new ways of organizing existing technologies) arise and discovered or created by specific persons, who then use various means to exploit or develop them, thus producing a wide range of effects Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

2. WHAT IS GREEN ENTREPREUNSHIP (GE)? Green entrepreneurs exist due to various reasons ranging from individual to environmental pressure, such as the intention to solve environmental issues, improve the efficiency of processes, and comply with government regulations (Schick et al., 2002). Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 3. GE continue.. The terms “green entrepreneurship”, “eco entrepreneurship” and “sustainable entrepreneurship” are used interchangeably. Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 5. FEATURES OF GE They act as entrepreneurs, realizing ideas with a high level of risk They have strong internal motivation related to a heightened sensitivity to environmental problems They address an environmental/social problem/need consciously and this is at the core of their business activity Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 Their business activities have a net positive effect on the natural environment and at the same time they are financially sustainable They consciously strive to contribute to a more sustainable future, contributing both with their social and environmental values. Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 6. WHY THE RESEARCH? In the aftermath of the global financial and economic crisis, the central role of entrepreneurship in boosting the economic activity has been emphasized in many countries. Governments have often allocated important shares of recovery packages to helping entrepreneurs, either in the form of loan guarantees, tax incentives, research credit designed to boost innovation, or systems to encourage self-employment Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 The more people are being self employed, the more cases of environmental degradation Therefore, there is urgent need to find a sustainable strategy for marrying economic achievement and environmental protection Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 The Purpose of this paper is to put to light on the role and opportunities for Green Entrepreneurs in changing energy economics in Malawi There is low uptake of GE knowledge in Malawian entrepreneurs Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 WHY GE Green entrepreneurs have considerable potential to contribute to mastering the pressing environmental problems of our time through the introduction of new, environmentally friendly products (Schaper, 2005) Can catalyse an overall shift of business strategies towards more sustainable products and processes (York and Venkataraman, 2010). Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 METHODOLOGY This research paper is principally based on secondary data which has been published in various research journals, leading magazines, websites and government reports. Random interviews were done to consolidate the understanding Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 DATA ANALYSIS The collected data was analyzed qualitatively. Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION Most Training institutions are not aware of the GE eg- Mhub, Zomba entrepreneurs hub, Blantyre entrepreneurs hub and many business schools (randomly selected) Most business schools in Mzuzu embed the concept of sustainable development and green economy (although the GE is highly exaggerated) Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 Glance and random interviews with small entrepreneurs reveal little and no knowledge of GE Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 13. CONCLUSION The overall aim of this study is to extend the current knowledge on barriers and triggers to green entrepreneurship and to provoke further research into the emerging phenomenon of green entrepreneurship, which is believed to have the potential to make a great difference for the environment and society in the next century. Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018

Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018 14. RECOMMENDATIONS Need for a large-scale empirical research. All new projects with emphasis in community social and economic transformation should promote the GE Business training institution should embed GE concept in their curriculum Energy & Environmental Center-EEC 2018
