Cells to Systems

Cells building blocks of all living things microscopic need food to grow must get rid of waste get energy through cellular respiration

Parts of All Cells Cell Membrane-”skin” that allows materials to enter and exit the cell Nucleus- “brain” with chromosomes (DNA) that tell the cell what to do Mitochondria- the “mighty” producers of energy Vacuoles- “stomach” that stores food Cytoplasm- material that fills the cell

Parts of a Cell

Types of Cells Branching Cells Flat Cells Round Cells send signals example: nerve cells in your brain Flat Cells cover a surface example: skin cells Round Cells carry oxygen shape lets the cells move easily example: red blood cells

Special Cell Structure Cilia- on the cells in your lungs to sweep dirt and germs out of the airways “Cilia, your hair is lovely!”

And now… …a cool look at these microscopic wonders! “Oh sweet momma, I can’t wait for this!”

Tissue Organ Organ Systems Cells Tissues Organs group of cells working together to do the same job examples: muscle tissue, nerve tissue Organ group of tissues combined into one structure examples: heart, stomach, skin plant examples: leaves, flowers

Organ Systems Organ Systems Cells Tissues Organs Organism group of organs and tissues that work together to carry out a life process example: mouth, stomach, and intestines work together to digest food example: muscular system and skeletal system move your body

Some Organ Systems in Humans Muscular System- movement/strength Skeletal System- support/protection Respiratory System- breathing Digestive System- using food Nervous System- brain function Circulatory System- moving blood
