The Trial of Che Guevara Hero or Villain?

Background In 1950s Cuba, inspired by Marxist communism, Argentinian-born Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara entered Cuba with a plan to unite the masses. Guevara incited the masses to a communist revolution. The medical student held strong ideals, the foremost of which was that change could only come at the hand of an armed and violent revolution. For those familiar with the man behind the most reproduced face of our time face, the battle cry “Viva La Revolución” heralds Guevara as a visionary and a revolutionary. But is he a worthy icon or a glorified thug and failure? We will delve back in time and decide if Guevara should be remembered as a villain or a hero.

Video Directions As we watch the video, mentally keep track of examples that support whether Che Guevara was a hero or villain. We will watch the video in segments. When we stop, write the examples you heard anywhere on the large sheet of paper. Next, categorize your examples on your large paper into supporting Che as a hero or villain.

3 Paragraph Summary Talk with your group whether you believe Che was a villain or hero and decide as an individual a stance. Lastly, use the 3 paragraph summary stems to show your stance and understanding of Che Guevara. Each segment represents one paragraph.
