Northamptonshire Music Education Hub Gothic Horror Film Music and Composing Competition 2018 / 19

Competition outline Partners: Northamptonshire Music Education Hub, Northamptonshire Secondary Academies, NMPAT & composer Ben Till Purpose: To explore the Gothic Horror genre Inspiration: 200th anniversary of the publication of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, 1818 Gothic literature & art (100th anniversary of the death of Debussy) What and who for? A composing competition open to all secondary KS3, KS4 & KS5 students

Prizes KS3 winner - £75 voucher KS4 winner - £75 voucher KS5 winner - £75 voucher Overall competition winner – additional £75 voucher Note: if a group composition wins a category, the voucher will need to be shared between entrants.

Task Either: Compose a sound track to one of four film clips Frankenstein’s bride, she’s alive (2’ 30”) Phantom of the opera (4’ 50”) Woman in Black 1 (1’ 30”) Woman in Black 2 (4’ 15”) Or Compose music using one of the following as its starting point The devil in the belfry by Edgar Allen Poe (short story) Gothic from The Liquid Hour by Bruce Barber (poem) Gothic book cover (picture)

Notes Film entries must be submitted as a sound track synchronised with a film clip Sound tracks may be recordings of an acoustic performance or digitally generated (e.g. using a sequencer and midi equipment) No accompanying film score is required Pre-composed loops etc. are not allowed For KS3 entries, film clips may be shortened using video editing programmes. However, they may not be altered in any way e.g. by adding effects etc. http://www.iwm.org.uk/corporate/privacy-copyright/licence Winning entry non-film compositions may be performed live or with a background visual slide of the chosen stimuli

Timeline Tuesday 11th September – Project Launch Friday 14th December- Competition Deadline for submission of each school’s winning entries to NMPAT for judging (Note: numbers of entries from each school to be confirmed in early December) Tuesday 16th January - 6.30pm 8pm: Workshop or all finalists 4 – 6pm Awards evening for composers, teachers and parents 6.30 – 8pm
