Unit 12: Intro to Statistics

Data Displays: Dot Plots

Vocabulary Dot Plot – a data display similar to a line plot that shows frequency on a number line using . Skewed – A data set in which the mean, median and mode are not all the same number. The diagram will have a “tail”. Symmetrical – a data set in which the mean, median and mode are the same number. The diagram will look evenly spread out. Range – the difference between the highest and the lowest value in a data set.

Put your finger on your pulse and get ready to count. Heart Rate Data Put your finger on your pulse and get ready to count.

Heart Rate Data 𝟖𝟗 𝟖𝟕 𝟖𝟓 𝟖𝟒 𝟗𝟎 𝟕𝟗 𝟖𝟑 𝟖𝟓 𝟖𝟔 𝟖𝟖 𝟖𝟒 𝟖𝟏 𝟖𝟖 𝟖𝟓 𝟖𝟑 𝟖𝟑 𝟖𝟔 𝟖𝟐 𝟖𝟑 𝟖𝟔 𝟖𝟐 𝟖𝟒

Heart Rate Data Analysis What was the heart rate for the student with the lowest heart rate? 79 2. What was the heart rate for the student with the highest heart rate? 90 3. What is the range of the heart rates? 11

Heart Rate Data Analysis How many students had a heart rate greater than 86? 5 5. What fraction of the students had a heart rate less than 82? 1 11 6. What is the most common heart rate? 83 7. What heart rate describes the center of the data? 85 (or any response close to the center)

Dot Plot Practice Eighteen bakers were asked the number of cakes they sold in a day. The results are recorded in the table below. Represent each set of data with a dot plot. Give each dot plot a title.

Dot Plot Analysis Practice The number of paintings done by 17 artists in a week is shown in the dot plot below. Each dot represents 1 artist. 1. The _______ dots represent 17 artists. Answer: 17 2. The data shows a ____ dot plot centered around ____ . Answer: symmetrical, 4 3. Most of the data falls between ______ and ______. Answer: 3 and 5

Dot Plot Analysis Practice 4. The data spans from _______ to _______. Answer: 1 to 7 5. The range of the data is _____ . Answer: 6 6. Artists typically did between _____ and ______ paintings in a week. Answer: 3 and 5

Dot Plot Analysis Practice The weekly spending (in dollars) of 20 students in a class is shown in the dot plot below. 1. The _______ dots represent 20 students. Answer: 20 2. The dot plot has a “tail” on the left which means the data is ____. Answer: skewed 3. Most of the data falls between ______ and ______. Answer: $30 and $40
