Big Idea Specific skills are necessary in order to obtain and keep a job in the competitive design industry.

Job Application The employer uses the application to obtain information about educational background, work experience, and the applicant’s ability to follow directions, write neatly, spell words correctly, and provide accurate information. It is very important to take the time needed to complete the application correctly.

Job Application Remember the following: Be neat Be accurate Complete all areas Follow the directions exactly Check spelling

Cover Letter A cover letter is sent with a résumé when applying for a job. Used to introduce the applicant to the employer and show how skills match the job. Should answer the question- Why should I hire you? Sometimes used as a screening process before reading the résumé.

Cover Letter Should Include Your Address (Do not put your name here) Today’s date Mr. /Ms. Employer’s name (If you don't have one, get one!) Title Company’s name address

Cover Letter Should Include Dear Mr. or Ms. Employer 1st PARAGRAPH: Short (2 to 3 sentences) “why I am writing to you” and the position applying for Things to consider: The position and why you are writing How you heard about the position Make a connection—why you are interested in the position Be brief

Cover Letter Should Include 2nd/3rd PARAGRAPH: (longer) where you highlight your most relevant experiences that uniquely qualify you for the position. Things to consider: First sentence should be an opener, with a quick introduction. The information about you should be accomplishment-oriented and directed at the skills and qualifications needed for the job.

Cover Letter Should Include The main part of the paragraph should provide evidence to back up what you've just stated. Cite specifics associated with experiences. Reference your résumé but never word for word. Strong examples are important. The final sentence is a summary. Mention again the position title and company name.

Cover Letter Should Include Last paragraph: Short (2-4 sentences) where you refer to the enclosed résumé and request an interview. It is very important that you thank the reader for his/her time and consideration. Sincerely, Your Signature Your Name

Résumé A summary of educational background and work experiences relevant to the desired position. Highlights accomplishments in order to get an interview from the employer.

Résumé Listed below are some résumé writing tips: Limit to one page. Do not include everything accomplished, but everything stated must be true. Determine the type of layout that works best. Use bold to emphasize key skills and accomplishments. Choose a font that is easy to read—no larger than 14 point and no smaller than 10 point.

Résumé Tailor the résumé to the position. Use a consistent writing style. Complete or fragmented sentences are acceptable, just be consistent. The headings are in bold type. Do Not use "I" or "my." No contractions and define abbreviations.

Résumé Start each description with an action word. Use present tense verbs when referring to current activities. Use past tense verbs when referring to past activities. Be concise and clear in all descriptions.

Résumé Do not try to impress employers with the use of complicated or confusing words. Make sure there are no errors. Have someone proofread it. Use quality paper. Use the same color and type of paper for résumé, cover letter, and envelope. Make sure the paper photocopies well.

Follow Up Letter Like a thank you note to the employer after the résumé is mailed and before an interview. Purpose is to restate interest in the job. Send 3-6 weeks after the résumé was sent. Looks like the cover letter with a few changes.

Follow Up Letter Address the follow up email to a specific person. Introduction and date the résumé was sent. Ask for follow up information. End the follow up letter with a request to hear about the position. Give time frames and a number at which you can be reached for an interview.
