What History did you make this summer?

What happened so far? – Recap: Last term we learned about what Scotland was like before the Wars of Independence began… 1249-1286: The Golden Age of Scotland. 1286: The death of Alexander III.

What happened so far? – Recap: April 1286: The ‘community of the realm’ decides Alex. III’s granddaughter will succeed him on the throne. They elect 6 Guardians to rule Scotland until she is old enough to rule by herself. September 1286: The Bruce faction form the ‘Turnberry Band’ and attempt a coup to seize the throne. 1286-90: The Guardians have their difficulties, but remain in control.

…we’ve learned how do the ‘how fully?’ question at Higher level… Tools to do well… …we’ve learned how do the ‘how fully?’ question at Higher level… READ the question and make sure you understand it. 1 READ the source (highlighting points to use in our answer). 2 Begin our answer by saying the source PARTLY describes the question. 3 Write FOUR separate paragraphs, each raising one relevant point from the source, making sure our point is linked back to the question and its relevance explained. 4 Write that the source doesn’t give the whole picture… 5 … and then write SEVEN separate paragraphs, each raising one relevant point from recall, making sure each point is linked back to the question and its relevance explained. 6 Now have a look at your homework to see how you did!

…advice for the year ahead: Tools to do well… …advice for the year ahead: Make good notes: take notes that make sense to you and aren’t so short that they lose their meaning. 1 When writing up answers to questions, either note the question down or refer to it in your answer. Give good detail in your answers so they are useful to you. 2 Your jotter should be your study guide for exams. THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE CARE AND EFFORT TO MAKE IT AS GOOD AS POSSIBLE. 3 Genuinely aim to meet your deadlines. Falling behind will lead to work quickly adding up with you getting stressed. 4 7 Listen closely to Neil – he will often have the answers! Practise the source questions and get good at your technique – especially before assessments! 5 Reading is a skill – it needs practise! Read to improve your ability and understanding and to find the answers you need more easily. 6

The Problem of the Maid: Too young to rule the kingdom by herself for years to come. Regents will have to rule until she is old enough (The Guardians). Risk of childhood mortality. = Problem = Explanation why Only 2 years old! The Problem of the Maid: Task: In your groups discuss what other problems faced Scotland in 1286 by accepting the Maid of Norway as the king’s successor and complete this diagram in your jotters. After a 5-10 mins, share our findings in plenary and add any info you have missed.

Today’s Success Criteria: Be able to describe and explain the problems posed by Scotland choosing to accept the maid of Norway as its next monarch. Be able to describe how events in Scotland evolved towards the succession crisis, from 1249 to 1286. Share plans for the year ahead in Higher History.
