Production of Sesame Oil Group 20 Golden Oil

Team Members Preston Ji Emma Huynh Charlotte Ntim Kyle Redenbach Maame Sarpong

Problem Statement Produce sesame oil from sesame seed Produce via a chemical engineering system solvent extraction and recovery large scale continuous process

Inspiration South Sudan case Major seed producers tend to be developing countries Oil produced on a farm to farm basis

Project Scale Economy of scale can potentially yield more efficient and cost effective production Produce 1% of worldwide output 62,000 t/yr 2.15 kg/s

Why Sesame? First cultivated oil plant (3500 BC) “oil, liquid fat” Highest oil content (50 wt%) Survivor crop - grows in drought, heat, excessive rain

Why Sesame Oil? Health benefits: Vitamins K, E Unsaturated fat (linoleic + oleic acid, ~ 80%) Chemically stable Does not oxidize even at elevated temperature

Why Chemical Engineering? Mechanical process: “Squeezing” the oil out Remove 50 ~ 90% of the oil (depending on particle size)

Automatic industrial sesame oil press machine (Alibaba)

Why Chemical Engineering? Chemical process: Extract (leach) with solvent (n-hexane) “Like dissolves like” Remove 98 ~ 99% of the oil Minimal adverse health effect

Main Processes of A Typical Oil Mill (Agico Group)

Market Size Prices: Seed: $300 per ton ($200 ~ $800) Oil: $500 per ton ($300 ~ $1000) (Order of magnitude accuracy - prices vary significantly) Worldwide production in 2014: 6.2 million tons

Oil Customers Main markets: Middle East and Asian countries Strong cultural and historical influence: Oil producing regions are also oil consuming regions

Byproduct Customers Byproduct: solid waste (organic cake) Rich in protein, excellent animal feed

Our Vision We aspire to be moral examples for others and posterity We seek to: Approach our project with humility Guard against arrogance and idolatry

Our Vision Next May we hope to be able to say: We have not indulged ourselves in what is vain; We have not acted as if mankind is his own salvation; We have not forgotten the covenantal promise of life incorruptible. God help us.

Conclusion/Questions Chemical process is one of the effective processes in extracting the oil Our team is in the research stage
