Illustrated Flow Chart Step 1: Find the next 2 blank side-by-side pages in your notebook.

Illustrated Flow Chart On the left blank page, copy the following diagram into your notebook. You will be filling it in with information in a moment. You do not need to write the word “picture” in your notes. Instead draw the box to put a picture in.

Illustrated Flow Chart Picture Picture Picture Picture Picture Picture

Illustrated Flow Chart On the right blank page, copy the following diagram into your notebook. You will be filling it in later. Right now you are just saving this space.

Illustrated Flow Chart Lithification Sedimentary Rock Compaction Cementation

Step 2: In the appropriate boxes, fill in the flow chart with the following words/phrases: Weathering Erosion Produces sediment Wind Chemical Weathering Moving Water Physical Weathering Gravity Removal & Transport Ice (Glacier) Deposition

Step 3: Include pictures for: Weathering 2. (label sediment) 4. 5. 6. Deposition

Write your questions: Level 1 Level 2 Define compare Describe Contrast Identify Group List Sequence Name Explain Classify/Categorize Give the relationship Cause/Effect 1 “Level 1” Questions & 1 “Level 2” Questions

4. Lithification Lithification: Physical & chemical processes that transform sediments into sedimentary rocks. Lithify in Greek means “turn to stone”.

Lithification Process 1. Most sediments are deposited in low areas (valleys, ocean basins). 2. As more sediment is deposited in an area, the bottom layers are subjected to increasing pressure & temperature 3. These conditions cause lithification

2 Steps in Litification Compaction: weight of overlying sediment forces the sediment grains closer together. Cementation: Mineral growth “glues” sediment grains together to form solid rock.

Continuation of Illustrated Flow Chart Lithification Sedimentary Rock

Write your questions: Level 1 Level 2 Define compare Describe Contrast Identify Group List Sequence Name Explain Classify/Categorize Give the relationship Cause/Effect 1 “Level 1” Questions & 1 “Level 2” Questions

Summary Describe the sequence of events of weathering, erosion & deposition and their relationship to sediment. Explain the process of lithification and what the end result of lithification is.
